As an art educator, I strive to generate an engaging and dynamic learning environment for a diverse population of students, to provide conditions for growth through self-motivated inquiry methods while enabling active learning through the process of creating. My role as the instructor is to guide their individualized paths to discovery while providing the resources and structure to allow them to build an understanding and awareness of art. Creativity and artistic production thrives on diversity. I foster individualized and creative thinking by generating problems for students to work through, allowing them to take ownership of their learning and gain self-awareness throughout the duration of the course. I  provide clear communication and expectations at the start of each semester, and design my syllabus with enough structure for students to know the trajectory of their learning while being broad enough to provide ample room for individualized exploration. Projects are designed as way to start or frame a question, but not to direct a specific product or outcome. I challenge my students daily to think critically and creatively, be responsive to the world around them, and to take action. Learning happens through doing. My curriculum is built upon allowing students freedom to explore their questions and curiosities, while providing a solid foundational knowledge of the formal and structural aspects of art and design. Through the summation of their experiences in the classroom, students are able to utilize their acquired skills, developed sensory awareness, and a creative outlook to benefit and enrich their lives beyond the context of visual art. By using their experiences to provoke thought, thought to inspire action and action to find meaning, students have the ability to engage in critical dialogue across disciplines and areas of their lives.  Above all, I aim to inspire my students to approach the world with an active process of looking, interpreting, and expressing, allowing them to become transmitters of the world around them.
