The theologian and pedagogue Jan Amos Komenský, latinised Johann Amos Comenius, (1592 - 1670) is one of the most important school reformers in Europe. As an educator he was a politician,a preacher and finally bishop of the Bohemian Brethren (Unity of the Brethren), a persecuted exile church of the Counter-Reformation. His private, social and political life was largely marked by the brutal conflicts and epidemics of the Thirty Years' War and subsequent military conflicts. Nevertheless, in view of the chaos of the world, he developed the humanistic vision, to enable a "paradise of the heart" through human education and training, from which rise peace-promoting energies. His understanding of an ecumenical peace education remains an everlasting model.
