About

I’m a historian and hacker who researches the possibilities and politics of digital cultural collections. You can follow what I’m up though my updates feed or on Mastodon.

One day a week I’m Associate Professor of Digital Heritage in the Centre for Creative and Cultural Research at the University of Canberra. The rest of the time I’m available to work on your projects – so feel free to get in touch!

My main project at the moment is the GLAM Workbench, which brings together many examples, tools, code and tutorials to help people explore the digital collections of galleries, libraries, archives, and museums.

I also had a look at Historic Hansard's search which seems to have died recently. I've just thrown some more memory at the server and so far so good. It's sort of remarkable that my hacked together Elasticsearch instance has been running for 8+ years with virtually no maintenance… (2026-01-15 ↗)

More bot blocking and rate throttling today to try and get the Tungwah Newspaper Index stable. I think it's ok now… (famous last words) (2026-01-15 ↗)

Ok, the Tungwah newspaper index has been moved and should be working again: https://resources.chineseaustralia.org (2026-01-13 ↗)

Looks like the Tungwah newspaper index (running on Heroku) is suffering the same fate, though instead of pushing up costs, it's just become unusable. I'll move it as well. (2026-01-13 ↗)

Today is an unexpected #maintenance day. Noticed that a little database of Trove maps on Cloudrun was getting hammered (and pushing up my costs!), presumably by AI bots. I've moved it to another server with some bot protection. You can find it here: https://wraggelabs.com/trove-maps/ (2026-01-13 ↗)
