Looks like our membership is growing—this is very exciting!
I’m still learning MLA Commons, but it looks like only administrators have access to the Announcements page. If you want to share information, please post it to the blog or email me and I can post it to the Announcements page (sdonohue at cocc dot edu).Stacey

HEP Part-Time and Contingent Faculty Issues on MLA Commons 12 years, 3 months agoYou recently received a notice from the MLA that you are invited to participate in the discussion of the groups and how they are organized. Several respondents have suggested that the “Part-time faculty” group should be “changed” to the Non-Tenure-Track faculty group. There is a group that is “contingent labor in the professions” . It is a…[Read more]

Definitely keep this as part-time faculty. Universities such as Tiffin University do not have ANY tenure track employees/faculty as all full-time faculty are not tenured and no tenure is possible there. There is definitely a distinction between full-time and part-time and that does not necessarily equal tenured/non-tenured.

Thanks for your input<karen.. Can you post this to the "document" . I think it is paragraph 146!

HEP Part-Time and Contingent Faculty Issues on MLA Commons 12 years, 4 months agoMLA can provide travel funds for the annual convention for Part-time and contingent faculty, and graduate students. Up to $300 will be awarded to qualifying PTF to defray convention expenses. for those who are also income eligible. Please make use of this generous travel grant!
-
I didn’t know this. My English Dept. refused to support my travel which is why I didn’t attend last year’s conference. Where and how do we apply for the funds?
-
Hi Pamela, Here’s the link:
http://www.mla.org/assist_nontenureIf you do make it, please join the Part time faculty for a great planned panel on “defining” –the language issues around contingency and Part time faculty members. I think it is saturday, around 5:00 pm!

Thanks! This is very helpful. Maybe I’ll be able to make it. Let me look into airfares.

HEP Part-Time and Contingent Faculty Issues on MLA Commons 12 years, 10 months agoIs anyone interested in talking to a radio producer from NPR (marketplace show) on PT faculty issues? They are interested in “savings and spending” patterns and “whether the reliance on PTF is “sustainable”. They are particularly interested in California adjuncts, but if anyone is interested I would forward your name. Thanks!
-
Margaret, I am a California Adjunct (San Diego) and would be delighted to speak with NPR/Marketplace. pjacoby@sdccd.edu
-
When will they be airing the story?
-
Not sure about that, Louisa. I will let you know!
-
Thank you! Since you posted, I have heard a few segments about adjuncts from various NPR shows. Also, there’s a big meeting planned this weekend for adjuncts trying to organize in the Boston area. It makes me hopeful that change for the better could be coming.
-
-
Margaret — How long ago did you get this request? I just heard from a colleague that NPR Marketplace already aired the story and that it did NOT accurately represent PTF issues. I haven’t had a chance to listen yet. See
“They boiled the issue down into a minute and a half, barely mentioned adjuncts. They mention fewer tenure track jobs…[Read more]-

OK Good to know — this must mean that the request actually IS in response to the story that aired yesterday. Feel free to give them my contact info if they want to talk to someone outside of California and in a state where PTF face significant obstacles to unionizing.

HI Peter. Thanks for writing. I will forward your contact info to the producer!

Thanks.

I would be willing to be contacted by NPR, but am in Arizona.

Thank you so much Gloria. I will forward your contact details. You might want to message me an EDU address (peter, you too!)

Correction: I’ve added a bulletin board style “forum” to the Two Year College Discussion Group (looks like we had one last year but it was not “active”). If you’d prefer to have a discussion there instead of on the blog, that’s another tool.

This forum is fine. Thanks for taking care of this.
