About

I completed my bachelor’s degree in history at the University of Kentucky, where I completed a senior capstone paper on twentieth-century mining unionization in Appalachian Kentucky. Focusing my interests on frontiers in early medieval and late antique Britain, I studied my master’s degree in medieval studies at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where I wrote my dissertation on the Northumbrian expansion into East Lothian in the seventh century. I am currently undertaking my Ph.D. in history at Boston College, where I am researching early medieval frontiers in northern Britain.

My current research focuses on the ways in which Northumbrian, British, and Pictish elites conceived of their frontiers and territorial borders, as well as the way such frontiers actually functioned on the ground. I am especially interested in networks and non-traditional models for early medieval boundaries.
