      Hi John,

I’ve had a read through and think it is a really thoughtful and well-balanced vision and policy considering some of the current challenges and opportunities for opening up books. I’m not too familiar with similar visions and policies, some of the fully OA publishers do have a clear vision statement and the University of Michigan Press has a public mission statement and open access policy too (though I’m sure you may be familiar with these already).

It’d certainly be great to see more of these (especially from university presses and those publishers that have both open and closed content) and hear more about their OA vision through this thread in the coming months.

Hi everyone, I’d like to share an exciting development for our Open Infrastructures in the U.S. (the Directory of Open Acccess Books (DOAB) and OAPEN).

Earlier this week we announced a Collective-Action agreement between DOAB, OAPEN and the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA), becoming a part of the BTAA member libraries’ “strategic portfolio of investments in open infrastructure to support the growth of open science and open scholarship”.

We’re grateful to be a part of this portfolio and have the support of these 15 member libraries. Moreover, it is great to see investments in open infrastructure includes infrastructure for OA books specifically. Hopefully other open infrastructures/groups for books can build on this too.

On April 7th, OPERAS and OASPA organised a workshop on ‘Innovative business models for open access book publishing – six approaches in Europe’. These six approaches were all applied to small or medium-sized academic book publishers and may be relevant for any small or medium-sized publisher interested in OA book publishing.

A short report, along with the recording of this event is now available here:

      Hi everyone,

I would like to invite you to participate in a short 8-10 minute survey on citizen science funding in the SSH, part of the Collaborative Engagement on Societal Issues (COESO) project.

The survey is on citizen science funding in the SSH and the results will help the COESO project in identifying funding needs for different types of stakeholders in the SSH community for participatory research projects with and for society.

COESO gathers 15 partners from 6 different European countries. One of its main objectives is to work with funders to innovate funding schemes for citizen science in SSH.

      Survey link

More info can be found in this blog post. Responses can be submitted until April 15.

Hi, great to see this article which ‘opens up’ the conversation and explores additional steps that could be taken – including books and chapters.

      To add to Agata’s comments:

If there is indeed some level of agreement on the limitations and extent to which the Gold OA model, through a ‘Book-Processing-Charge (BPC)’ model, can work on a large-scale for books and chapters, a pilot testing into an alternative, Diamond OA model, could be interesting. Such a pilot and learnings from such a pilot can also be interesting for others, and lower the barriers for establishing an international collaborative funding model for books and chapters.

Reading books is something I personally enjoy. Books, whether these are scholarly books or non-scholarly books provide readers with an extensive and rich resource that can go into a level of detail and explore connections other formats cannot.

Books provide the author with an opportunity to tell an elaborate story, provide much needed context which certainly should be cherished as today’s world is increasingly faced with challenges such as polarisation, information bubbles and a lack of nuance. Open Access for books holds the potential to address these challenges.

As a final part of my studies, I did an internship at Knowledge Unlatched in Berlin back in 2017, where I was first exposed to the world of open access and particularly open access books.
