I am currently beginning to work on a study of the use of humor in the Icelandic sagas. The preliminary study involves reading selected sagas: Njala, Barðar, Bandmanna, to name a few, identifying scenes and actions that may be described as humorous. Also, I’m trying to identify a “period” definition of humor in the Old Norse world: how does the Old Norse sense of humor compared with the modern sense of humor.
