Hi there,
This group is growing, but it’s quiet—probably because it doesn’t have a member moderator! Would any of you like to step up and get the conversation going in here? You can use this space for collaborating on journal articles or panel proposals, peer reviewing work, adding events to the group calendar, sharing CFPs and news items of interest—and building your collection in the repository, of course. If you might be interested in moderating for a while and helping grow this community, send me or @adonlon a message here on the Commons and we’ll help you get started.
Best,
Nicky

Hi Andreas,
Thanks for the message! Creating a seamless way to provide feedback on items in CORE is most definitely on our roadmap, but we have some UX work to do before we get there. In the interim, I have a couple of suggestions:
1. Sharing something you upload with a group generates an activity record in that group’s /activity tab. You could respond to that record asking for feedback or comment.
2. Alternatively, you could deposit the item in CORE (you’d need to make it into a PDF or Word doc, because you’re right, CORE currently only accepts full text / image items, not metadata or links only) and share it with the group. Then you could create a discussion thread in the group in which you (a) post the DOI and (b) ask for comments.I’m sorry this isn’t more intuitive at this point in time. We’ll get there!
Best,
Nicky -

The LA Times just gave it quite the review. I can’t wait to start it, but I’m reading Cryptonomicon right now, and have to finish that first (almost there…)!

I’ll start!
I’ve just finished The Obelisk Gate, the second book in NK Jemisin‘s Broken Earth trilogy, and enjoyed it even more than last year’s Hugo-winning The Fifth Season. I find Jemisin’s world building to be remarkable, and am more than a little sad that the final installment doesn’t come out until the fall. February also saw me finally read Madd Adam, the phenomenal Margaret Atwood‘s follow-up to Oryx and Crake, and Neal Stephenson’s excellent Reamde, a madcap adventure involving hackers, Silicon Valley, the Russian mafia, a geologist, and the CIA.
As for other recommendations, I’ve been following the work of Nick Harkaway (particularly Angelmaker and The Gone-Away World) and David Mitchell (particularly The Bone Clocks and The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet), and I’ll devour anything by China Miéville, whose The City and the City that keeps coming back to haunt me.
You? What are you reading? What do you recommend?

Hi @titusstahl and @paoloaranha, your wish is our command! Now more spacing between CORE deposits in profile—and they’re divided by category. Thanks for the feedback!

Hi, @anatudugarit,
This should be fixed now! Let us know if you continue to have problems editing your profile.

Oh, and fonts look all different too! OK, I’m on Safari 10.0.2 and Mac OS 10.12.2, so that might be it. I’m going to get a developer to look into this right away. Thanks, @anatudugarit!

Hi, @anatudugarit,
Are you logged in to Humanities Commons on Safari? I’m on a Mac too, and I just logged in on Safari and get this. As you can see, I followed you, so I now have an “unfollow” option, but I can follow others.
As you can see from Émilie’s profile (viewed on a Mac in Safari), there’s also a “follow” link right under her profile picture.

Hello again!
I just wanted to let you know that we’ve implemented some measures to prevent this kind of spam appearing in private messages in the future. Thanks so much for bringing the matter to our attention.
Best,

Ha! No, we’re in NYC too. I think it’s the UTC settings on WordPress. Will investigate…

YES! We have this on our road map for the next six months (and we’re really excited about its potential). Thanks for the feedback!
P.S. For now, you could always send the author a direct message, or start a discussion thread in a group. -

Hi @sohnyrin,
Have just confirmed that this is indeed a bug. Thank you for letting us know! We’ll investigate ASAP.

Émilie,
In the buttons at the top of the group’s page, you should see a “Send Invites” button. If you don’t, it’s possible that the group’s admin has turned off the ability for other members to invite people. If that’s the case, you could either message them or use the invitation button on the hcommons-staging.org homepage and edit the text of the message to tell them about the group.
Best,
Nicky

Hi there,
Unfortunately some of what you’re asking for here would require Academia.edu to have an API that we could interface with, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
We’ll look into the various options for importing contacts from social media sites, but again that is probably going to require those sites to be open to us interacting with them.
As for adding facets to the member search, that seems more doable. Improving search is a development priority for us over the coming months, so we’ll look into this feature request being a part of that. For now, though, you can look at an alphabetical list of Humanities Commons members by going to https://hcommons-staging.org/members/, using your search term, and then selecting Alphabetical as the sort.
Thanks for your feedback, @marinelives and @sohnyrin!

This isn’t a request we’ve had before, @cplong, but it certainly sounds interesting. We’d be keen to know if others would also use such a feature. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks, Sophia! Will check it out tonight. As an aside, I just binge-read Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland’s The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O., which, because it featured (a) time travel, (b) excessive bureaucracy, and (c) the military-industrial complex, was a thoroughly enjoyable read!

Oh, @camillahoel, I would love to read that article when you’re feeling ready to share! And yes, I agree that Octavia Butler feels not-quite-speculative enough in 2017. Le sigh.

Hi again, @rjudd11,

There is a favoriting option on Humanities Commons, but it’s a little hidden. If you click on the star below any activity record in hcommons-staging.org/activity, such as notifications of items being deposited in the repository, or on any item in the group’s activity tab (see image), you’re essentially bookmarking that item. You can access all favorited items by going to the dropdown menu below your avatar, hovering over Activity, and then clicking favorites.

The Activity item in that same dropdown will show you all your activity.
Finally, the Reply by Email option would, in fact, post the comment directly into the discussion thread. But yes, I agree that a redirect upon login is important too, and have added it to our development queue.
Thanks again! -

Hi there,
I hope you don’t mind me coming in here, but as the project manager for Humanities Commons, I’m super interested in your feedback! As you know, we’re in early beta, so we’re keen to find out what’s working and what’s not. If you haven’t logged out of the Commons, the e-mail notifications are great and take you right to the conversation, but if not, I agree that it’s a very winding route. One of the things we’re considering is the ability to conversations by e-mail. Is that something that might interest you? Or is being brought directly to the conversation after log-in more important?
Thanks so much for trying out Humanities Commons!
Best,
Nicky
