Seo-Young Chu deposited “Dear Stanford: You must reckon with your history of sexual violence” by Seo-Young Chu in the group
Poetics and Poetry on Humanities Commons 3 years, 6 months agoIn 2000 a Stanford professor raped me. My rape is now older than I was. (I’m still not as old as he was.) The more time passes the more I’m struck by Stanford’s apathy and fecklessness about sexual violence. I wrote a letter asking Stanford to stop compounding the abuse and to reckon with its rape culture. This letter—including the “Incomp…[Read more]

Seo-Young Chu deposited Utopias Misplaced: The Cost of Outsourcing Dystopian Poetics to North Korea in the group
Poetics and Poetry on Humanities Commons 3 years, 7 months agoThis is a slightly revised version of the text of a talk that I (Seo-Young Chu) gave as part of the Fall 2014 Franke Lectures in the Humanities at Yale University. I’m sharing the text here to make the lecture more accessible. Topics include: North Korea/the DPRK, the “uncanny body politic,” the uncanny valley, “dystopian poetics,” what it means…[Read more]

David Sewell started the topic Anyone distributing metadata to Ex Libris knowledgebase? in the discussion
ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 7 months agoA librarian at Duke, which subscribes to some of our digital publications, is recommending that we submit our metadata for discoverability to Ex Libris, which I gather is a major player in databases for discoverability. A quick perusal of their website and documentation is fairly daunting, so I was wondering if other presses are submitting…[Read more]

Seo-Young Chu deposited Hwabyung Fragments in the group
Poetics and Poetry on Humanities Commons 3 years, 8 months agoIn “Hwabyung Fragments” the Korean American poet Seo-Young Chu uses pieces of Korean mythology, family lore, DMZ iconography, speculative lyricism, allusions to Plato’s Symposium (the figure of one’s missing other half), and allusions to chimerism, mosaicism, and twinning to explore generational trauma, Korean division, postmemory han, the…[Read more]

Laura Hernández-Lorenzo deposited Stylistic Change in Early Modern Spanish Poetry Through Network Analysis (with an Especial Focus on Fernando de Herrera’s Role) in the group
Poetics and Poetry on Humanities Commons 3 years, 9 months agoEarly Modern Spanish literature, also known as Golden Age Spanish literature, is a well-established period in the History of Spanish literary tradition, covering from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the end of the seventeenth century, from Renaissance to Baroque works. In the case of poetry, the stylistic change from one aesthetic to the…[Read more]

Manfred Engel deposited Typologizing the Dream / Le rêve du point de vue typologique. Ed. by Bernard Dieterle and Manfred Engel. Würzburg: Königshausen & Neumann 2022 (Cultural Dream Studies; 5) — Contents and Preface in the group
Poetics and Poetry on Humanities Commons 3 years, 9 months agoThere is nothing like a firmly established typology of dreams – simply because the taxonomies on which existing typologies are based vary widely: They can be oneirocritical, thematic, or based on dreaming characters or their responses, on narratological functions, etc. The essays in this volume will discuss a broad range of dream types, with a s…[Read more]

Behnam M. Fomeshi deposited Democratic Poetics: A Comparative Study of the US and Iran in the group
Poetics and Poetry on Humanities Commons 3 years, 10 months agoWalt Whitman (1819–1892), the father of American free verse, and Nima Yushij (1897–1960), the father of Persian New Poetry, each played a central role in his respective poetic tradition. Whitman’s free verse and Yushij’s New Poetry are the results of translating the discourse of democracy to a literary discourse. In this way, there are multipl…[Read more]

Jenn Bennett-Genthner started the topic ONIX Feeds for Library of Congress CIP registration in the discussion
ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 11 months agoHi, all,
Curious if anyone is using LoC’s ONIX feed feature to apply for CIP data. We at SUNY are attempting to prep ONIX feeds for this but we can’t get the LoC to respond to our requests. If anyone has feeds they could share as an example, that would be really helpful!

Behnam M. Fomeshi deposited Roger Sedarat. Emerson in Iran: The American Appropriation of Persian Poetry in the group
Poetics and Poetry on Humanities Commons 4 years agoThrough the case of Emerson’s appropriation of Persian poetry this volume provides a thought-provoking example of how the literary founding father of a nation is cosmopolitan and receptive of foreign cultures in what might seem a purely “nationalistic” agenda. It will appeal to those in the field of Persian literature, comparative liter…[Read more]

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 4 years agoB&N display’s TOCs and I believe Amazon UK as well. I was told (by someone at BISG I think that they believe Amazon US uses the TOC internally for Keywords, etc…but hard to say what Amazon truely does and doesn’t do).

Samara Rafert started the topic Split binds/Edelweiss in the discussion
ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 4 years agoIf your press publishes split binds for scholarly books, how do you handle both editions in Edelweiss? (Maybe this is more of a general marketing question.) Our sales reps have pretty adamantly told me not to list them individually, but only display them as related products. But Yankee Book Peddler has specifically requested that I do list them separately.

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 4 years agoThanks, Katie. We’ve also just modified our website feed to be able to display TOCs.
Problem is, when our title mgmt system was modified to enable <contentdetail> TOCs, the implementer didn’t grasp that the content item sequence number (LevelSequenceNumber = b284) is not the same thing as Component Number (ComponentNumber = b289). The former…[Read more]

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 4 years agoHi @davidrsewell,
We have TOC data in our ONIX feeds and it displays on the book pages on our website and Edelweiss.
It also feeds to CoreSource, so it is available for any partners that will take it, but that is a moving target. Similar to your experience, we have not seen Amazon display the TOC data on book pages.
