      Hi everyone!

The MLA is looking for a development coordinator. This is more or less an entry level position and (if I am honest) it probably does not pay great, but it would be a good way to get your foot in the door of the development world (much of which does pay extremely well). I would think of it as a postdoc.

      Description:

Under the supervision of the head of communications and with guidance from the director of outreach, is responsible for spearheading the MLA’s fund-raising campaigns and initiatives. Oversees planning, communications, and logistics for fund-raising and engagement events. Engages in direct outreach to current and potential donors; plans and executes donor engagement initiatives; works with the director of outreach to develop strategic and fund-raising partnerships; conducts prospect research. Prepares donor communications, fund-raising reports, income projections, and budgets. Works with colleagues to ensure that donation messaging and donor engagement are folded into the full range of MLA programming and to ensure that information systems technology accurately and efficiently operate to support all MLA development needs. Contributes to communications and marketing initiatives, including Web pages and digital marketing and social media campaigns. Uses strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with supervisor, colleagues, MLA members, and external contacts. Maintains confidentiality in all matters that require it. Performs other duties as assigned.

      Qualifications

      • At least one year of relevant development experience, including  prospect research, donor tracking, and event planning (experience with grant applications a plus)
      • Undergraduate degree, preferably in a humanities discipline (some graduate work in a humanities field desirable)
      •  Excellent communication, organizational, and research skills
      •  Experience with Microsoft Office, WordPress, and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter
      • Experience with customer relationship management platforms such as CiviCRM, Blackbaud, or Salesforce desirable
      • Experience with Google Analytics desirable
      • Experience with Photoshop or InDesign desirable

Candidates should submit a cover letter and résumé to Development92018@mla.org. Candidates must be able to work legally in New York State. At this time, the MLA is unable to provide relocation assistance. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

I’ve just uploaded two PDF’s to the Files section of jobs that were recently posted to Versatile PhD.

One is a 50% position at UC Merced that involves providing logistical support for a grant that builds community partnerships and graduate mentorship in the interdisciplinary humanities. (I imagine they might be willing to supplement the other 50% with teaching).

The second is a teaching / administrative hybrid role for an after school program for gifted kids in Vienna, VA.

      Check them out!

I’ve recently starting compiling a Connected Academics reading list. On the list are the following:

Designing the Professional by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans (muscle your way past the class assumptions and the design thinking cultishness and there is excellent advice)

Not for Profit by Martha Nussbaum (not sure this is her best book but I think it’s good scaffolding)

Limits of Critique and The Uses of Literature by Rita Felski (useful for thinking about the overall trends in our profession that make this difficult)

I haven’t read it yet, but Kathryn Temple, PI of Connected Academics at Georgetown, just recommend The Value of the Humanities by Helen Small.

As soon as it comes out, Katina Rogers’s Putting the PhD to Work will definitely be on this.

The office of the dean of the graduate school at Princeton has a new position open for a professional development program specialist with a deadline of 1 October.

This job will report to Amy Pszczolkowski, Assistant Dean for Professional Development and friend of Connected Academics.

Hi everyone! I’m Stacy Hartman, and I’m the Project Manager of Connected Academics at the MLA. I got my PhD from Stanford in German Studies in 2015 and moved to NYC to start with the MLA a week later. I’m currently working on an edited volume around the topic of transforming graduate education called Mission Driven: Reimagining Graduate Education for a Thriving Humanities Ecosystem with my colleague and grad school BFF Jenny Strakovsky at Georgia Tech.
