Ricky Broome deposited The ‘Other’ Boniface: Vita altera Bonifatii in its Frisian and wider Carolingian contexts in the group
History on Humanities Commons 8 years, 9 months agoThe text known to modern historians as Vita altera Bonifatii – the ‘second’ or ‘other’ Life of Boniface – is a very different text than the far better known Vita Bonifatii composed by Willibald in the decade after Boniface’s death. This paper presents some preliminary thoughts on the anonymous author’s purpose in writing the Life by placing the t…[Read more]

Ricky Broome deposited Outsiders in the Community: Franks and non-Franks in the Late Merovingian Period in the group
History on Humanities Commons 8 years, 9 months agoThis paper provides an analysis of the attitude towards non-Franks in the late Merovingian period, distinguishing between the ethnic community of the Franks and the political community of the regnum Francorum, which were conceived of existing side by side. The paper attempts to show that, unlike in the early Carolingian period, ethnic labels were…[Read more]

Ian Wilson deposited Conquest and Form: Narrativity in Joshua 5-11 and Historical Discourse in Ancient Judah in the group
Historiography on Humanities Commons 8 years, 9 months agoOne goal of this essay is to offer an exploratory, historiographical analysis of the conquest account in the book of Joshua, an analysis that focuses upon the sociocultural milieu of ancient Judah. I propose to show how this narrative of conquest might have contributed to discourse(s) among the literate Judean community that perpetuated the text,…[Read more]

Ian Wilson deposited Yahweh’s Consciousness: Isaiah 40-48 and Ancient Judean Historical Thought in the group
History on Humanities Commons 8 years, 9 months agoThis essay works toward three goals. First, it lays some groundwork for researching prophetic literature as a source for ancient Judean historical thought. Prophetic literature reveals a great deal about how ancient Judeans thought about and with their past, as it was represented in their literary repertoire. Second, it examines Isaiah 40-48, to…[Read more]

Ian Wilson deposited Joseph, Jehoiachin, and Cyrus: On Book Endings, Exoduses and Exiles, and Yehudite/Judean Social Remembering in the group
Historiography on Humanities Commons 8 years, 9 months agoIn a recent ZAW article, Michael Chan argues that II Reg 25,27-30 alludes to Gen 40-41, and that this allusion provides a hermeneutical key for understanding the purpose of II Reg 25,27-30 in an Enneateuchal context: it points to an imminent exodus, a return from exile and a gathering of diaspora in the promised land. This article picks up where…[Read more]

Alice White deposited British Army Area Commands & Command Psychiatrists (Appendix E) in the group
British History on Humanities Commons 8 years, 9 months agoThis illustrates the psychiatrists who were appointed to Area Commands in the British Army during the Second World War, along with their commanding officers and other psychological staff at that Command. I found it a challenge to pin down people to places and times when researching my PhD – hopefully this will save others some trouble!

British History on Humanities Commons 8 years, 9 months agoThis appendix gives a brief summary of the role of some individuals who did work connected with Army psychiatry in Second World War Britain (particularly the development of schemes of officer selection and POW rehabilitation). The data was compiled from biographies, autobiographies, obituaries, census information, letters and articles published in…[Read more]

Alice White deposited Science, Technology, or Medicine? The Case of the Construction of Officer Selection Tests for the British Army in the group
British History on Humanities Commons 8 years, 9 months agoMilitary historians have debated the role of the War Office Selection Board (WOSB) in creating a “People’s Army” and democratising the British military during the Second World War. The role of these boards in reconfiguring the identity of the psychiatrist and the boundaries of their expertise in mid-twentieth century Britain, however, has been lar…[Read more]

Alice White deposited Silence and Selection: the “trick cyclist” at the War Office Selection Boards in the group
British History on Humanities Commons 8 years, 9 months agoIn 1939, psychiatrists wrote to the War Office of Britain to offer up their services in the likely event of war. The response? A resounding silence. This unpromising start marked the first words (and the first silence) in a discussion of psychological science that would span the war. The ” trick cyclist ” , or psychiatrist, was a controversial…[Read more]
