About
Shonte Clement (they/she) is a Teaching Assistant at The University of Texas at Dallas pursuing an MFA in Creative Practice. They are an experimental multimedia artist interested in sculpture and interactive media. From being raised Southern Baptist by a single mother more spiritual than religious to understanding sexuality and gender within the context of The South, their work is fueled by the desire to investigate how humans form as their whole selves under power structures and oppressive systems.
Shonte’s work sits at the intersection of Black feminist scholarship, Queer studies, and play studies. Through participant interaction with sculptural objects and interactive media, they craft figurative objects with the purpose of making visceral the emotions they feel sitting at the intersections of their identity. Participants are encouraged to make new meaning of the work through this interaction, and to see themselves reflected in the constellation of experiences of another.
They are currently considering how materials used in sculpture can reflect our material reality and how we make meaning from those experiences.
