Comics and Graphic Narratives on MLA Commons 11 years, 2 months agoHi Amanda — I’ve got an article on a graphic narrative about to appear in a collection, and I had to get copyright permissions from all the publishers involved (i.e. Canadian, US, and British publishers); perhaps check with the anthology’s editors — perhaps you’ll get lucky, and they will look after getting copyright permissions for you!?

Comics and Graphic Narratives on MLA Commons 11 years, 2 months agoHi, Amanda,
I don’t know if this helps, but I recently wrote an essay about comics for publication, and I had to get permission to use them. I got lucky because one of them was creator-owned, so I could just contact her through Twitter, but the other was owned by Dynamite Comics and was unsuccessful in contacting them.
This was for the journal…[Read more]

Comics and Graphic Narratives on MLA Commons 11 years, 2 months agoHi everyone,
I wrote an essay about a specific comic book and the essay is going to be published in an anthology. My question is about reproducing images from the comic in the anthology. I am, of course, citing the comic and the images in the essay, so is there any issue with using images from the comic in the anthology? It would be much more…[Read more]

Literature of the English Renaissance, Excluding Shakespeare on MLA Commons 11 years, 4 months agoThe Robt Greene topic reminds me. Renn. scholars in the U.S. should be aware of work in Britain which has changed/supplemented knowledge of earlier drama. Greg Walker’s work is a good key to the whole and and his history re-names the “morality” play as part of Tudor Drama in his book of that name, his anthology, and bibliography. Rece…[Read more]

Literature of the English Renaissance, Excluding Shakespeare on MLA Commons 11 years, 4 months agoKristen beat me to suggesting the Melinkoff/Gieskes volume, which is really the place to start, especially their excellent “Recent Studies” chapter. Literature of the English Renaissance, Excluding Shakespeare on MLA Commons 11 years, 5 months agoHello All,
I’m starting a project looking into the theater scene of London pre-1592, using Robert Greene and his “Conny Catching” pamphlets as my entry point. My hope is to gain a better understanding of the social environment at that time through the different contributors of the “pamphlet wars”, of which Greene seems to be at the center. The…[Read more]

Shakespeare on MLA Commons 11 years, 7 months agoI personally love the idea of Shakespeare and Galileo. Your intuition seems exactly right to see a parallel in the cultural (mental) achievement of the two. For both, the essence was personal observation rather than illustration of pious dogma, such as we think of when we think of medieval thought. But Shakespeare confined himself to the s…[Read more]
