Just a few more days before we send out our CFP for our annual meeting!

Here’s the current text (make edits here!):

Interest Group Meeting of the Scholars for Social ResponsibilityAt the Annual Meeting of the Society for Music Theory 2023November 9 – November 12, 2023Denver, CO / Online The Scholars for Social Responsibility Interest Group (SSRIG) invites 250-300 word abstracts for 10-minute lightning talks to be presented during our meeting at the SMT 2023 annual meeting. The group meeting will use a blend of lightning talks and small group discussions between talks. Our meeting will offer a remote participation option.

      Title

Music Theory’s Responsibility: Thinking Together through the Personal and the Professional

      Description

The SSRIG aims to think about how a sense of responsibility has shaped and continues to shape the field of music theory. Responsibility looks and feels different for music theory community members depending on our identities, career goals, and where we are in our careers and lives. This meeting creates a space for music theory scholars to share experiences, reflect on our discipline, and connect with scholars in our community to collectively increase equity in music theory scholarship.

Talks might address the following questions:

<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″>What does responsibility mean to you, personally and/or professionally? Has your sense of responsibility shifted?
<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″>When or how does teaching function as responsibility?
<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″>How have institutions (broadly defined to include societies such as the SMT) approached our actions that stem from a sense of responsibility? How have scholars navigated responsibility at the institutional level?
<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″>How have music theorists historically used responsibility as a framework?
<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″>What are ways we can be responsible to one another?
        <li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″>How might self-advocacy be understood as a form of responsibility?

We encourage personal narratives and direct accounts of how you have encountered responsibility, answering such questions as:

<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″>When did you feel a sense of professional responsibility? How did you react?
<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″>How have you thought through responsibility at different stages of your life and/or career? Did responsibility inspire you to act?
<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″>How have you engaged responsibility in relation to your identities and scholarship? How might other scholars assess their own responsibilities?
<li style=”font-weight: 400;” aria-level=”1″>What role have you seen irresponsibility play in your experiences?

We encourage scholars at every stage of their work to apply. We are looking for talks from scholars from a range of career backgrounds, stages, and goals. We hope that participants will use this as an opportunity to share ideas and organize with others and that the session will encourage SMT members and friends to link with one another and find new projects.

      Submissions

The SSRIG is a group of academics who are interested in bringing the issues of the world into our classrooms, conferences, and journals; in finding common ground in our lives as academics, musicians, and human beings; and in using our positions of power to speak up for those who have less. Our members are interested in a range of issues around diversity, social justice, environment, gender, race, disability, and more. What unites us is a passion for bringing these issues into our teaching, research, and professional activities.
