Lucy Barnes replied to the topic Accessibility of OA books in the discussion
Open Access Books Network on Humanities Commons 3 years, 10 months agoI’ve been doing some more digging into accessibility resources and have found the following:
– Improving the Accessibility of your Mainstream Digital Content, which seems to be a wealth of resources from the Inclusive Publishing group, coordinated by the DAISY consortium: https://inclusivepublishing.org/about-the-inclusive-publishing-hub/
– The…[Read more] -
Luca Baffa replied to the topic Accessibility of OA books in the discussion
Open Access Books Network on Humanities Commons 3 years, 10 months agoAt OBP we have adapted our InDesign-based workflow to produce accessible EPUBs. So far it has been a mixture of adopting some new typesetting practices and doing some post-production work. It’s still a work in process, if anyone has comments on this I am all ears!

Sebastian Nordhoff replied to the topic Accessibility of OA books in the discussion
Open Access Books Network on Humanities Commons 3 years, 10 months agoWe have recently discovered that pdfs produced with LaTeX have a certain treatment that does not interface well with common screenreaders for visually impaired people. Fixing this is actually a major project and will get pretty gory. We will not have the funds available at LangSci to do this on our own, but we might apply for some funding. If you…[Read more]

Kathleen Fitzpatrick deposited Dissertating in Public in the group
Open Access Books Network on Humanities Commons 3 years, 10 months agoKathleen Fitzpatrick analyses the sudden isolation graduate students find themselves in during the dissertation process. In the humanities, she observes, graduate students are regularly habituated into an anxiety of intellectual independence whereby sharing ideas, collaboration and publishing work in progress is to be considered suspect and…[Read more]

Performance Studies on Humanities Commons 3 years, 10 months agoOne of the medical manuscripts recovered from Tomb No. 3 at Mawangdui (dated 186 B.C.E.) states that, “When a person is born there are two things that need not to be learned: the first is to breathe and the second is to eat.” Of course it is true that all healthy newborn human beings possess the reflexes to breathe and eat. Yet, the imp…[Read more]
