Bernd Brabec deposited Academic (In)Discipline, Research (In)Sanity and the Conundrum of (Indigenous) Timescapes in the group
Anthropology on Humanities Commons 2 years, 11 months agoThis contribution focuses on strategies to bridge what in anthropology is called ontological incommensurability: Indigenous worlds often seem inaccessible to modern thought. Instead of trying to open Indigenous worlds to Westerners, I rather intend to make Western worlds accessible to Indigenous thought; and likewise, academic disciplines…[Read more]

Martin Boehnert deposited Methodologische Signaturen : Ein philosophischer Versuch zur Systematisierung der empirischen Erforschung des Geistes von Tieren in the group
Anthropology on Humanities Commons 2 years, 11 months agoHow do we know if animals can think? In extension of the previous debate on human-animal relations, this book analyzes the conditions and contexts of the scientific acquisition of our knowledge of animals. The current discussions within animal philosophy revolve around the three central questions of whether we can attribute a mind to animals, what…[Read more]

Martin Boehnert deposited Grundzüge einer Philosophie der Tierforschung in the group
Anthropology on Humanities Commons 2 years, 11 months agoIn current debates about the relationships between humans and nonhuman animals, knowledge about animals is often adopted from the sciences. However, this largely ignores the fact that relationships of this kind also exist in empirical animal research and that these constellations between researchers and the researched have both ethical and…[Read more]

Martin Boehnert deposited When Controversies Flare Up, Matters-of-Fact Become Matters-of-Concern in the group
Anthropology on Humanities Commons 2 years, 11 months agoAnimal welfare and animal rights issues have reached the curricula, agendas and priorities of a wide range of educational institutions and initiatives. Their actors are faced with the challenge of not only explaining the relevance of animal ethics and animal rights, but also conceptualising how to teach them: How can animal protection and animal…[Read more]

Patrick Eisenlohr deposited Atmospheric resonance: Sonic motion and the question of religious mediation in the group
Anthropology on Humanities Commons 2 years, 11 months agoBecause of its material characteristics, the sonic poses a challenge to the influential paradigm of religion as mediation. This article makes a case for a neo-phenomenological analytic of atmospheres in order to do justice to the sonic in anthropological approaches to religion. Approaching the sonic as atmospheric half-things, I propose a…[Read more]

Patrick Eisenlohr deposited Language and identity in an Indian diaspora: “Multiculturalism” and ethno-linguistic communities in Mauritius in the group
Anthropology on Humanities Commons 2 years, 11 months agoIn this essay I focus on language among people of South Asian background in a diasporic location, Mauritius, for two reasons. First, language has often been considered as one of the cultural elements whose persistence may yield clues about the production of diasporic identity. However, diasporas do not exist objectively on the basis of a…[Read more]

Open Access Books Network on Humanities Commons 2 years, 12 months agoHi David, that’s indeed an excellent question, and just to add to John’s mention of the OATP, there’s also an option to narrow one’s search down via boolean operators, so searching for oa.business_models AND oa.books will provide you with a more specific version of the list that John mentioned…[Read more]

Bonnie Russell replied to the topic Publicly Engaged Publishing – OER now live! in the discussion
Publishing and the Publicly Engaged Humanities on Humanities Commons 3 years agoI’m delighted that the OER has finally been released! Gathering real-life examples from those engaged in this work has been a journey of discovery. I’ve learned so much from those we’ve interviewed, as well as thinking through how values frameworks can help negotiate both the work itself and the interpersonal relationships that work resides. This…[Read more]

Publishing and the Publicly Engaged Humanities on Humanities Commons 3 years agoIt’s so exciting to see the OER go live! Many thanks to Kath Burton and to Bonnie Russell for making it a reality, and also to Rebecca Kennison for coming up with the idea. Open Access Books Network on Humanities Commons 3 years agoHi David, excellent question! John makes a great suggestion with OATP, which is really useful in keeping up with new announcements and current developments. The difficulty with any online list is keeping it up to date — as you note, there are a lot of new initiatives like Path To Open launching at the moment. My colleague Tom Grady and I recently…[Read more]

David Watson started the topic Is there a list of Open Monograph schemes? in the discussion
Open Access Books Network on Humanities Commons 3 years agoThere’s now a fair number of different Open Monograph schemes, running different models or variations of models – and new schemes keep launching, ie ‘Path to Open‘ that just launched. This is great, but does mean it’s difficult to keep track of what the current OA monograph landscape looks like.
Is there anywhere a list of these different schemes?
