• This article examines the primary distinctions between the Gospel books published by Patriarch Athanasius III Dabbās in 1706 in two versions – a standard one (the Tetraevangelion) and one containing anonymous comments (the “Lectionary”). The author conducts research on Dabbās’s translation, investigating medieval and modern Patristic and Scriptural commentaries from both Orthodox and Catholic traditions to identify the sources of the printed commentaries and the specific editing contributions made by Dabbās. The primary objective is to discern Dabbās’ intent: whether it aimed solely at educating clergy or if it also sought to fortify them against the influence of Catholic missionaries. This article presents the preliminary findings of the research.
