Paul Spence is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Digital Humanities.

After a background in teaching and journalism, he completed a BA in Hispanic Studies with Applied Computing at DDH (then the Centre for Computing in the Humanities), before joining the department in September 2001.

He led the ‘Digital Text’ research area at DDH from 2003 to 2010, when he was responsible for the development of XML-based and semantically aware frameworks for information retrieval and digital publication on over 30 research projects at DDH. He is Co-Investigator, Project Manager or Technical Research Director of a number of major research projects with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, AHRC, JISC, Leverhulme Trust and European Commission. From 2010 to 2011 he was Acting Head of Department for CCH, renamed as the ‘Department of Digital Humanities’

In recent years he has become involved in a number of projects involving the application of Digital Humanities methods and tools to Spanish and Spanish American studies.
