Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months agoFinally got up the nerve to upload my book proposal for Book ‘Em: Libraries, Librarians, and Information in Mystery Fiction, 1970-2018. I hope to get this item (with a sample chapter) submitted by the end of the month.
I realized that we need to add more subject headings in detective fiction–there’s a subject heading for Golden Age, but not fo…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months ago@ninalager Yes! Humanities Commons sites have a number of WordPress plug-ins that you can activate for your site (our upcoming mini-challenge will focus on plug-ins you can use on HC sites, so we’ll cover this topic a bit more very soon). One of these plug-ins is the WordPress Importer which lets you export a WordPress site from elsewhere and…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months agoI am so looking forward to this challenge, but I still can’t decide what kind of site to create. Will wait a bit and see what other people come up with in the meantime.
@sarastarbucksantos : Yours is looking really good!
@caitlinduffy49 : Is there anyway one might revive an already existing (and very old…) WordPress site by incorporating or…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months agoI just created a site! You can find it here. As you can tell, it’s still very much a bare-bones structure, and my only post is an introductory one (nothing much new besides a link to what I think is the funniest Zizek “lecture” to date). I found the examples linked in the challenge really helpful, as they gave me a sense of what scholars are using…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months ago@SaraStarbuckSantos: Thanks for sharing how you’re using Altmetric to research the current work in your field! I think that’s a great idea (and one that I plan to use myself).
@mklopez : Altmetric is not a perfect tool, so it is bound to come up short in some areas. For example, the fact that articles need a DOI in order for Altmetric to track it…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months agoThanks for the example sites compiled in this challenge!
I’m going to sit this one out, thought, because I already have a professional portfolio and blog on WordPress, and my course sites are hosted by my university.
My personal challenge in the next two weeks will be to link to my previous course sites from my portfolio site.

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months agoWelcome to our fourth challenge!
Challenge #4 guides you through the process of creating your own site through Humanities Commons. Right now, we’re just focusing on building the site’s structure and look. We will add content in Challenge #5: Sites 2.0.
The full details and instructions for our fourth challenge can be f…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months ago@mklopez, I am really glad you share your doubts about the value of the Altmetric tools here. I did install the Altmetric It plug-in, and tried it out briefly, but was mainly disappointed by the limited places in which it seems to be looking for mentions. Also surprised to find, when I tried it on somebody else’s work (which I consider well-known…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months agoWell … I tried it, but it was depressing. A lot of my articles are with journals that don’t assign DOIs, so nothing is generating buzz. And the one that I did check had 1 tweet, from MLA from when I deposited it in CORE a few years ago. I’m not sure I want to put a badge on my personal website advertising that.
On the positive side, I can see…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months agoI have previously found CORE useful for syllabus inspiration, and I’ve also found a few research articles of interest. This challenge prompted me to have another root around, and I’ve just downloaded two new articles on issues of digitisation that look highly relevant to the book project I’m working on. As for uploading material of my own, I still…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months agoThese tools are extremely helpful! I experimented a little bit with the Altmetric bookmarklet on a few articles to see what scholars in my area of interest are saying about those articles/subjects. I found the demographic and geographical breakdown particularly interesting, because it made me much more aware of who might be reading my own work.…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months agoI am still trying to get permission to share some of my published work in CORE, but meanwhile I found an excellent article in CORE that might be of interest to many current and aspiring academics: Devoney Looser’s essay “Me and My Shadow C.V.,” about the many failures and rejections we have to face in submitting conference proposals, publishing…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months agoI appreciate this challenge largely because I’ve been remiss in mining the CORE for my research. Additionally, I’ve been thinking about using the CORE for teaching introductory lessons on bibliography and research, especially in pointing students towards the strengths and limitations of databases and archives. Hopefully, with time more scholars w…[Read more]

I’ve just posted about our third mini-challenge on our blog. You can find the post here.
For this mini-challenge, you don’t need to create anything new. Instead, it asks you to explore two super helpful (free) tools created by Altmetric. One tool helps you to have greater awareness and control of the digital conversations…[Read more]
