    About

I started off as a musician and recording engineer, working in the music and broadcast industries.
In 1989, I was asked to do some one-off teaching, and this experience was an epiphany for me. I loved it as much as music, and felt I was naturally good at it. Over the next several years, I gradually scaled back my music work in favor of teaching. Soon education had become my passion and my career.

By 2006 I was becoming increasingly unhappy with the structure and objectives of mainstream education. I began questioning fundamental assumptions, which led to a learning journey (that continues to this day) about education, the Arts, business, society and the technology driving the current revolution.

I work in Further Education colleges in the UK, and also set up independent, community education projects that are outside the mainstream. I work across boundaries, taking ideas and approaches from one industry to try and see how well they might work in another – nothing is off limits.

I believe that learning is a social activity.
Teaching or facilitating learning is an art-form, underpinned by science/research and experience.
It’s a messy, chaotic process of improvisation within boundaries, from which great things can emerge.
We are going through a revolution, with unknown social outcomes – these are exciting times, and I love it!
