About

Marc Gandarillas (Vilafranca del Penedès, Barcelona – 1987) holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Florida (2022), as well as a M.A. in Ancient Cultures and Languages (2011), a B.A. in Linguistics (2014), and a B.A. in Classics (2009) from the Universitat de Barcelona. He specializes in variationist sociolinguistics as applied to Catalan heritage communities in the Americas. His interests include bilingualism, anthropological linguistics, revitalization, language contact (especially as applied to minority languages), language policy, and historical linguistics (especially within the Romance sphere). Marc has proudly served as a high-school and higher-ed language instructor (Latin, Catalan, and Spanish) for the Consorci d’Educació de Barcelona, North Carolina Public Schools, the University of Florida, and (currently) the University of North Dakota. He has also served as a textbook author, translator, and proofreader for reputable publishing and translation companies such as Santillana Grup Promotor, SD Editores, and 1Global Translators. Marc is passionate about languages (both modern and ancient). He is a firm believer in–not only embracing but also actively–promoting language diversity, social justice, and cross-cultural communication. He speaks fluent English, French, Italian, Catalan, and Spanish, and has some knowledge of German, Galician, Hebrew, and modern Greek.

    I am currently conducting research on the Catalan heritage in the Americas in the department of Modern & Classical Languages & Literatures at the University of North Dakota. I am contributing two chapters to Junyent, C. (ed.). Manual de llengües del món. I am serving as a reviewer for the International Journal of Lexicography. Finally, I am actively collaborating on a number of English-Catalan translation projects.
