Alt-Academics on MLA Commons 13 years agoWhile at work I am thinking about academics making time to write, esp. #altac folks. It’s especially hard for those of us who enjoy writing. I’m wondering about the research/writing routine of others who are #altac.

I’d love to hear from others about this, too. In my current position, I have 20% research time, as do my colleagues; this means that Fridays are meeting-free with the intent of allowing everyone a day of focused research, writing, coding, etc. (depending on the project). I have to do my purportedly “non-job” related research and writing outside of standard working hours in this job.

Yes, that’s my case too. My boss allows me to make time for research related to my job, but any projects not directly related have to be done outside of work.

For now, I’m trying to do a little every day early in the morning, but I find the super slow pace frustrating. This month I’m going to try something different and give myself a little extra time on weekends to work on my projects. I wonder how others negotiate writing/research time into their contracts.
