“Or elles swiche as men dye or peynte” Franklin’s Tale 72: can anyone make this scan? No appeal to “Lydgatean” would work. Bigger version of the question: did Chaucer write iambic pentameter, or not?

My reading of Chaucer’s meter is that it is not nearly as absolute in every line as later formalist verse would be in English. Even Shakespeare, whom we all know did write in iambic pentameter, breaks meter (example “To be or not to be: that is the question.”), and here, if we read “elles” and “swiche” as two-syllable words (anapestic), we end up…[Read more]
