Caitlin Duffy deposited Cartography of the Imperial Mind: The Dangerous Forms and Reforms of Dracula on Humanities Commons 7 years, 7 months ago
The late Victorian era was imbued with progressive scientific reform and palpable anxiety regarding the future of the British empire. These two topics may seem distinct, but they find mutual expression in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, in which the soulless Count travels from Transylvania (literally, “beyond the forest”) and invades Engla…[Read more]

Charles Gleek deposited Writing History: 19th Century African American Activism on Humanities Commons 7 years, 7 months ago
Our work in this course will center around two questions. First, what were the material and social conditions for Black men, women, and children living in the territory that would become the United States, from roughly 1750 until on or about 1860? While slavery is likely the first concept that comes to mind, additional concepts such as racism,…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 7 months agoI forgot to mention this during our first challenge, but I am completing each activity with you all.
For this challenge, I followed a few more users based on the personal recommendations list on my homepage. I also joined the group @sarastarbucksantos created (over here) and responded to her introductory post. I look forward to the discussions…[Read more]

Charles Gleek replied to the topic How can we foster group activity? in the discussion
Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 7 months agoThanks, Caitlin. I was just having a similar conversation with an international organization that I consult for (we were talking about online professional development/teacher training) One of the ideas we were kicking around was crafting best practices/guidelines for folks to consider when the run or participate in groups. These could include the…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 7 months ago@Cgleek Thanks for your thoughtful response!
I agree, regular hangouts can be really beneficial in creating active groups. The challenge-based work that we’re currently doing through this summer camp also seems to work well. Since HC groups are created and maintained by users, the HC team doesn’t have too much control over what they do, however,…[Read more]

Caitlin Duffy replied to the topic Challenge #2: Networking (6/11-24) in the discussion
Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 7 months ago@Djgavin Thanks for being part of (what looks like) a helpful discussion on the Speculative and Science Fiction group! I also appreciate your observation that Twitter and HC groups may not offer the same sort of networking possibilities. It might be helpful for all of us to strategically consider which platform(s) we want to invest time in and how…[Read more]

Neoliberal Fiction on Humanities Commons 7 years, 7 months agoHello, everyone!
Sara- Thanks for creating this group! 🙂
My name is Caitlin, I’m also an English Ph.D. student at Stony Brook University. Although half of my research focuses on 19th-century gothic literature (mainly American, but I also work with Victorian gothic fiction), the other half of my work deals with intersections between neoliberal…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 7 months agoOne thing that I’ve seen work on listservs are regular hangouts (Google works well, so too can Skype I gather) amongst members. Sometimes these can be lightning talks two mins to talk about your research, themed hangouts and discussions, or even panel planning for upcoming cfps and conferences. Another idea the HC folks may want to consider is e…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 7 months agoHello, campers! Happy Friday!
I hope your networking challenge is going well. Please let me know if you come across any obstacles or if you have any questions/ideas.
One common trend that I’ve noticed is that campers are running into dead or near-dead groups. The Humanities Commons team has also noticed less activity in some of the public, su…[Read more]

Caitlin Duffy replied to the topic Challenge #1: Profiles (5/29-6/9) in the discussion
Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 7 years, 7 months ago@CGleek Humanities Commons doesn’t currently offer stats on profiles at the moment because the team is trying to be thoughtful about what they implement. That being said, they do plan to have some metrics around CORE deposits emailed periodically.
The HC team is very open to hearing users’ thoughts. If you have ideas about what metrics would be u…[Read more]
