In 1525, Pietro Bembo in his Prose della volgar lingua published a condemnation of Dante’s Comedy that has often passed for linguistic and cultural criticism, yet might be better understood as satire.

This paper publishes a ceramic bowl in the Metropolitan Museum of Art depicting a Parthian shot. Although it lacks archaeological provenance, the bowl can be dated to the 4th to 2nd centuries BCE, and probably comes from northwestern Iran. It is, therefore, one of the few possible instances of a Parthian shot from the Arsacid Empire.

Reflections on Trevor Paglen’s (ab)use of the JAFFE dataset

Syllabus for 2021 edition of DH285: Introduction to Digital Humanities, taught at Michigan State University as a required course in the undergraduate Digital Humanities minor. The course is a survey introduction to the field, has no prerequisites, and is open to students from any major. Twelve students were in the course.

The article contains a historical account and commentary on Trevor Paglen and Kate Crawford’s unauthorized use of the JAFFE dataset.
