Salah D. Hassan replied to the topic Palestinian Human Rights Leader Attacks the Boycott in the discussion
Scholarship, Censorship, Exclusion on MLA Commons 10 years, 10 months agoInvoking Bassem Eid to challenge BDS is akin to citing Max Naumann to critique the 1933 Jewish Boycott of Germany: “Tell the Jews abroad, I beg of you, not to boycott German goods,” Dr. Naumann one day pleaded in his offices in Franzoischstrasse. “Tell them that the Jews in Germany are not so badly off as press reports would indicate. Tell the…[Read more]

Salah D. Hassan started the topic "Young, Democrats are trending away from support for Israel" in the discussion
MLA Members for Justice in Palestine on MLA Commons 10 years, 11 months agoA November 2014 poll conducted by the political scientist Shibley Telhami sought to identify trends in U.S. public opinion on the following issues: “How do Americans see Bibi Netanyahu in the first place? And how do these attitudes play into a broader, and growing national divide about policy toward Israel?” Telhami’s specific findings and his…[Read more]

Salah D. Hassan started the topic Growing Jewish support for BDS in the discussion
MLA Members for Justice in Palestine on MLA Commons 10 years, 11 months agoThere is growing support among many progressive and democratically minded Jews in the US, Europe and Israel who are unwilling to stand by and allow apologists for Israel to speak on their behalf. Numerous groups founded by committed Jewish journalists, scholars and activists are increasingly taking a stand against Israel’s policies and are…[Read more]

Salah D. Hassan started the topic David Lloyd's article on MLA Delegate Assembly 2015 Open Discussion in the discussion
MLA Members for Justice in Palestine on MLA Commons 11 years agoDespite Russell Berman’s claims in a previous posting to this group, David Lloyd’s article summarizing the open discussion at the MLA 2015 Delegate Assembly meeting in Vancouver fairly reflects the mood in the room, where for 90 minutes many Delegates and numerous members of the MLA spoke from the floor strongly in support of the academic boycott…[Read more]

As many of you will have heard, Resolution 2014-1 got 60% of the votes cast but did not reach the minimum of 10% of the total membership required (by a recent rule) in order to be officially adopted. Thank you to all who voted. I attach an op-ed by David Lloyd that to my mind gives a good sense of the meaning of the event:
Academics Vote for…[Read more] -

Thank you to everyone who voted on resolution 2014-1. As you will have heard, the resolution got 60% of the votes in its favor but did not pass because it did not reach the minimum of 10% of the membership required (by a recent rule). This still counts as a major victory. I attach an op-ed by David Lloyd:
Academics Vote for Freedom of Movement…[Read more] -

Please forgive me for being exceedingly tedious on the subject of the vote, which ends at midnight tonight. The bar of 10% of the membership that resolutions have to pass is a relatively new one, and arguably not a good one, given the general indifference (which those who proposed it probably were counting on). But it is still possible to prove…[Read more]

I’m writing to encourage people to vote on the Israel resolution (right of entry for Americans of Palestinian and Arab descent). I co-sponsored it, so obviously I believe it’s a good and fair and appropriate thing, but I think you will agree if you take a moment to look it over. Voting ends at midnight on Sunday. traditionally MLA resolutions hav…[Read more]

Please forgive this graceless appeal. The Israel resolution (Right to Enter) that I co-sponsored with Dick Ohmann is now being voted on. I think it’s a moderate and necessary gesture of support for our Palestinian and Arab colleagues who, though US citizens, have been denied entry to the West Bank to teach, do research, lecture, or attend…[Read more]
I’m among the 1500, but what worries me more than the opposition is the apathy of those who did not care to cast any vote. Not that we are much different here in Poland… Thank you for your post.
