I've been teaching the history of the symphonic poem as a special topic for the course 'History and Analysis of Music II, 1750–1900' this semester. In an effort to promote a more comprehensive understanding of music produced in ca. 1850–1900, I’ve included Augusta Holmès’s Irlande (1882) as one of the set pieces from which students can choose to write their final essay. Holmès was a French composer of Irish descent. She studied with #CesarFranck and wrote a number of symphonic poems, in addition to many cantatas, songs and operas. Irlande, as the title suggests, portrays the country of her origin at the time when the Irish Home Rule movement began to take root. A score can be found on IMSLP and I've attached a link to the recording below. #AugustaHolmès #womencomposer #symphonicpoem #ireland #nationalism @womencomposers@a.gup.pe @classicalmusic@a.gup.pe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3NCj237djs (2022-11-28 ↗)

I am also trained as a #conductor , working mostly with #orchestra , but sometimes with #opera and #choir as well. I’ve spoken and written essays for the Philharmonia Orchestra and the BBC orchestras, and would be happy to connect with the #classicalmusic mastodon too! (2022-11-25 ↗)

I'm a FWO Junior Postdoctoral Fellow at #KULeuven. My interests lies in the intersection of #musictheory, #musicology and #globalhistory and I specialise especially in music around 1900. My current project attempts a global history of early #musicalmodernism, looking specifically into the cultural counterpoint between East Asia, Europe and North America. I'm also completing a book on #musicalform and #dialectics drawing on my PhD research.
I'm working on musical modernism in #Japan in the early #shōwa period at the moment and looking forward to connecting with other music scholars and cultural #histodons.
As a start, here is a concert series which I'm looking into: #NewSymphonyOrchestra (now #NHKSymphonyOrchestra ) performing in celebration of the 2600th anniversary of the founding of the Empire of Japan in 1940 (pc: jaa2100.org). (2022-11-25 ↗)
