I want to see them closely analyze a piece of music in some way that is well-informed and intelligent. I administer DMA comprehensive exams at my school. The format of the exam is very open-ended; I just ask students to analyze two pieces. Asks students to identify 20th-c. modes versus major/minor, circle inflected pitches, and explain how a pitch center is articulated. Music examples are transcribed from the TV show Great British Bake Off (music by Tom Howe). Designed for the still-in-development v. 2 of Open Music Theory.
