Dissertation Project: “Beyond the Rubber Stamp: Explaining the Activity of Parliaments in Electoral Authoritarianism”

Summary: This dissertation unpacks the black box of parliamentary bodies in multiparty electoral authoritarian regimes, explaining when and why legislatures become sites of opposition obstruction, inter-elite contestation, or loyalist policymaking. The project engages in a multi-method approach, combining detailed analyses of micro-level intra-parliamentary data from the Russian Federation’s State Duma, accounts of legislative development in a series of process-tracing shadow cases of disparate dominant-party authoritarian regimes, and a broad statistical analysis of all electoral authoritarian legislatures from the post-WWII period to the present day.
