SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 4 years, 7 months agoDear group members,
In the survey following our 2020 meeting, a majority of respondents indicated interest in the IG organizing a special session proposal for SMT 2022. To do this, we would need to choose a topic, determine the program committee, and send out the CFP in late summer or early fall 2021. The program committee would then s…[Read more]

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 1 month agoHello Judd,
I have the list from Starr’s diss. To avoid having long lists of numbers and As and Bs heading to everyone’s inbox, please email me at VishioA@wpunj.edu and I’ll send it on.

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 1 month agoI’m hoping to be able to find a list of all all-trichord (or at least ten-trichord, omitting {036} and {048}) row-classes. I believe that Daniel Starr’s 1980 dissertation contained it in an appendix, but as an “independent scholar,” I have access only to journals through JPASS/JSTOR. Might anyone in the group have such a list to share?

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 1 month agoThank you, all, for your comments regarding the IG’s bylaws and for your participation in our survey.
Here are the main takeaways:- Bylaws were ratified on December 15, 2020 (by 11 votes, which is 15% of the current membership). If necessary, we can adjust/amend the wording at the next year’s business meeting. You can find the document on o…

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 1 month agoHi Tara,
I remember the discussion, and I thought the consensus was that the language needed to be tweaked. I don’t think it’s far off and I voted to ratify it as is. But I do think the question of tweaking should be considered in a future update to the bylaws.

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 1 month agoHi Josh,
There was some discussion of this section on draft 2, and the consensus seemed to be that the language was adequate as it is now, which is why we left it that way in the next two drafts. Since we’re already voting, let’s see how the vote turns out, and if it becomes a problem, we can always revise it in the future.
Thanks!

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 1 month agoThe bylaws look got to me, and thanks for all the work on them. The only question I have is what happened to saying “for scholars of art music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and avant-garde.”
or
“for scholars of non-commercial music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and…[Read more]

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 1 month agoHi everyone,
Thanks for your input on the bylaws. Here is a link to the final draft. The only non-cosmetic change made since the third draft is that “20th and 21st music” has been replaced with “music after 1945,” as Timothy Johnson suggested.
Please follow this link to vote on the bylaws and take the post-meeting survey. The deadline to…[Read more]

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 1 month agoGreat work everyone! The one thing that still trips me up is the first line: “scholars of 20th- and 21st-century music.” The group is Post-1945. The quoted part implies that we include pre-1945 and project an end date for the group. Maybe it outlives us?
I suggest: “scholars of music since 1945” instead of the above.

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 1 month agoHi everyone, thanks to those who commented on the last draft of the bylaws. I’ve uploaded a third draft. Based on the discussion, I only changed a few details related to defining quorum. (There wasn’t enough discussion to yield a clear consensus, so I went with 10 people or 5% of the membership, whichever is larger, with membership defined as the…[Read more]

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 2 months agoGood point! We had 21 responses last year. That’s 29% of our HC membership, and I would guess the average attendance at meetings is lower. (Although I suppose if we are going to use attendance numbers as a metric I had better make sure we can find those numbers… using the HC membership would certainly be a bit easier!)

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 2 months agoI think it’s worth asking how many responses you had to the survey last year—if 20% of the average of the last two meetings works out to be more people than responded, that would presumably cause some problems.

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 2 months agoHi Bob,
Thanks for these comments! I agree that changing it to a larger percentage makes sense. How about 20%?

SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group on Humanities Commons 5 years, 2 months agoThanks, Bob. Yes, we thought about this, too. I borrowed the quorum percentage from the Pop Music IG, which makes more sense for them since their membership is large (of course, nothing compares to our FB page membership 😀 )
We could definitely increase ours to 20%-25%, granted people vote and stay engaged with the IG issues.
