MLA Members for Justice in Palestine on MLA Commons 10 years, 10 months agoThese documents are eye-opening, and remind us, as MLA members, that the occupation and siege of Palestine have direct consequences for education (among many other things). In the most recent war on Gaza, more than a quarter of all Palestinian civilians killed were students. Fourteen institutions of higher education were damaged. Read on…[Read more]

Rebecca Comay started the topic Delegate Assembly 2015 – report on boycott discussion in the forum
MLA Members for Justice in Palestine on MLA Commons 11 years agoHere’s David Palumbo-Liu’s report in the Huffington Post on the discussion of boycott in the DA on Saturday.
Preliminary votes show that the DA recognizes (by a significant margin) that this is a urgent topic that the MLA needs to be addressing; that academic boycotts promote, rather than harm, academic freedom; and that those who speak…[Read more]

MLA Members for Justice in Palestine on MLA Commons 11 years agoHere’s hoping this will start a good discussion of this important issue. I’d like to urge you all to read the PDF “ Resolution ACBI Evidence” which was prepared to accompany the proposed boycott resolution (see under “Files” on the left side of this page). As many of you will have heard, Resolution 2014-1 got 60% of the votes cast but did not reach the minimum of 10% of the total membership required (by a recent rule) in order to be officially adopted. Thank you to all who voted. I attach an op-ed by David Lloyd that to my mind gives a good sense of the meaning of the event:

Thank you to everyone who voted on resolution 2014-1. As you will have heard, the resolution got 60% of the votes in its favor but did not pass because it did not reach the minimum of 10% of the membership required (by a recent rule). This still counts as a major victory. I attach an op-ed by David Lloyd:

Please forgive me for being exceedingly tedious on the subject of the vote, which ends at midnight tonight. The bar of 10% of the membership that resolutions have to pass is a relatively new one, and arguably not a good one, given the general indifference (which those who proposed it probably were counting on). But it is still possible to prove…[Read more]

I’m writing to encourage people to vote on the Israel resolution (right of entry for Americans of Palestinian and Arab descent). I co-sponsored it, so obviously I believe it’s a good and fair and appropriate thing, but I think you will agree if you take a moment to look it over. Voting ends at midnight on Sunday. traditionally MLA resolutions hav…[Read more]
