Caitlin Duffy replied to the topic #HCSummerRefresh: CORE in the discussion
Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 6 years, 6 months ago@cgleek – Thanks for sharing these exam lists! I also really like your idea of encouraging more people to upload and share their exam lists and other graduate student documents. I now plan to upload my lists to CORE, though they’re also already up on my site (linked in case anyone wants to see them). Creating an HC group that specifically caters…[Read more]

Lucy Ayre replied to the topic #HCSummerRefresh: CORE in the discussion
Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 6 years, 6 months agoI’m a complete newbie to HC and CORE so spent some time searching the repository first. I loved finding so much stuff in there that interested me and led me down a cool rabbit hole of groups and people discussing these topics. One feature I’d like to see is an ability to bookmark items in CORE that can be saved in my profile to read later.
I then…[Read more]

Charlie Gleek replied to the topic #HCSummerRefresh: CORE in the discussion
Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 6 years, 6 months agoOne area I think that HC can help its members with is the sharing of readings/exam materials. Yes, we’re all interested in posting our working papers and articles, but there’s real value in emerging scholars posting their comps reading lists, as well as departments posting mock lists, expected PhD readings, and similar documentation. To this end,…[Read more]

Charlie Gleek replied to the topic #HCSummerRefresh: Groups in the discussion
Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 6 years, 6 months agoSo…groups have always been tricky for me. I tend to find that (in my areas anyway) that the volume of posting papers/etc. far outweighs the discussion (for the record, I’m equally culpable in publishing material rather than engaging in discussion). I regularly search for topics and groups in and around print culture, book history, and southern…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 6 years, 6 months agoThanks, @ltyler and @cgleek, for sharing your thoughts! I really like Lisa’s idea of using time that I may have otherwise used procrastinating on social media on updating my HC profile. I’ll definitely use this method going forward!
I also agree with Charlie that the upcoming conferences section can be helpful in meeting and connecting with other…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 6 years, 6 months agoHi folks! Thanks for the thoughtful start to summer camp. While I’ve been working on my profile this summer in preparation for a soft entry onto the job market this fall, I overlooked the value of posting my upcoming conferences and invited workshops for the fall. As we consider the value of our profiles – not only as a showcase but as a tool to…[Read more]

Humanities Commons Summer Camp on Humanities Commons 6 years, 6 months agoI recommend updating occasionally throughout the year–I update my page when I just can’t stand to grade one more paper. It’s a really good way to remind yourself of your accomplishments, which can make you feel better about grading those papers after all.
