Whitney Trettien deposited Cultures of the Book (ENGL 034, taught remotely Fall 2020) in the group
TM Book History, Print Cultures, Lexicography on MLA Commons 5 years, 1 month agoThe book: it’s a soothingly familiar technology, one we all know how to operate. Open the front covers to reveal the text; turn the page to continue reading. Yet even the most seemingly ordinary aspects of the book, like titles and page numbers, had to be invented. In this course, we will work to defamiliarize the book, investigating how the f…[Read more]

Nicky Agate deposited The transformative power of values-enacted scholarship in the group
TM Libraries and Research on MLA Commons 5 years, 1 month agoThe current mechanisms by which scholars and their work are evaluated across higher education are unsustainable and, we argue, increasingly corrosive. Relying on a limited set of proxy measures, current systems of evaluation fail to recognize and reward the many dependencies upon which a healthy scholarly ecosystem relies. Drawing on the work of…[Read more]

Brian Croxall replied to the topic Concerns for 2021 Delegate Assembly? in the discussion
TM Libraries and Research on MLA Commons 5 years, 2 months agoLisa, these are great ideas. As with Cheryl’s, this is going to be impossible to do as a motion, but it’s something that we could propose that the Executive Council consider in the coming year. Some sort of statement about labor equity and protections during the pandemic would seem apropos.

Brian Croxall replied to the topic Concerns for 2021 Delegate Assembly? in the discussion
TM Libraries and Research on MLA Commons 5 years, 2 months agoCheryl, this is a good idea but one that wouldn’t be able to be done this year giving the timing on motions/resolutions. I wonder if there’s a standing committee of the MLA that might take the lead on such a thing. Still, it’s something I can work to surface.

TM Libraries and Research via email on MLA Commons 5 years, 2 months agoHi Brian,
Thanks so much for raising this issue. I’m deeply sympathetic to the issues relating to graduate study, but given this focus group, I feel like we should raise issues related to labor equity, expectations, and job safety for librarians. I think it would be helpful for MLA to have a statement of solidarity that demonstrates our o…[Read more]

Digital Humanities on MLA Commons 5 years, 2 months agoIn this paper we examine the representation of crafts in video games, particularly in “crafting systems” – collections of mechanics that are described as crafting within a game’s narrative.
