Rachel Neff replied to the topic Keeping Up with Research? in the discussion
Connected Academics on MLA Commons 10 years, 7 months agoWhen I first started my altac job at a university, I actively tried to continue my research project. That lasted about three months until the staff check out privileges made it too difficult to keep the materials long enough to do the in-depth research I was used to. Honestly, I had better library privileges as a graduate student.
I do publish,…[Read more]

Rachel Neff started the topic Where We Work—And How We Got There in the discussion
Connected Academics on MLA Commons 10 years, 8 months agoI work as a copy editor in a communications office at a large, public university. At the time I was looking for work, I had decided to look for employment outside of the academy if I could not secure a tenure-track position.
I spent a really long time looking for altac work (April 2013 – Oct. 2013) while simultaneously looking for tenure-track…[Read more]

Rachel Neff replied to the topic Introductions in the discussion
Connected Academics on MLA Commons 10 years, 8 months agoHello, I’m Rachel Anna Neff. I received my doctorate in Spanish literature in June 2013 and started working an alternate academic, or altac, job in October 2013.
I’m interested in helping other folks with doctorates figure out what to do if/when working for the academy doesn’t work out.

Rachel Neff replied to the topic How are online graduate degrees viewed? in the discussion
MLAgrads on MLA Commons 10 years, 9 months agoI have no opinion of SNHU. I haven’t heard any horror stories from fellow military partners, but that doesn’t mean the Great Google doesn’t have a few tales.
I’d tell your student to ask her future program to give her the names and emails of some current students. Just as if she were going to attend the program in person, I’d have her ask these…[Read more]

Rachel Neff replied to the topic How are online graduate degrees viewed? in the discussion
MLAgrads on MLA Commons 10 years, 9 months agoI completely understand your student’s desire to have a portable degree, since I too am attached to someone in the military and am currently pursing an online master’s (I already hold a tradition master’s and doctorate).
Online degrees are losing their stigma. However, one had to consider the reputation of the school providing the degree. If it’s…[Read more]

As many of you will have heard, Resolution 2014-1 got 60% of the votes cast but did not reach the minimum of 10% of the total membership required (by a recent rule) in order to be officially adopted. Thank you to all who voted. I attach an op-ed by David Lloyd that to my mind gives a good sense of the meaning of the event:

Thank you to everyone who voted on resolution 2014-1. As you will have heard, the resolution got 60% of the votes in its favor but did not pass because it did not reach the minimum of 10% of the membership required (by a recent rule). This still counts as a major victory. I attach an op-ed by David Lloyd:

Prove participatory citizenship is still alive! Vote on the MLA resolution! Last 8 hours!

Please forgive me for being exceedingly tedious on the subject of the vote, which ends at midnight tonight. The bar of 10% of the membership that resolutions have to pass is a relatively new one, and arguably not a good one, given the general indifference (which those who proposed it probably were counting on). But it is still possible to prove…[Read more]

I’m writing to encourage people to vote on the Israel resolution (right of entry for Americans of Palestinian and Arab descent). I co-sponsored it, so obviously I believe it’s a good and fair and appropriate thing, but I think you will agree if you take a moment to look it over. Voting ends at midnight on Sunday. traditionally MLA resolutions hav…[Read more]

Please forgive this graceless appeal. The Israel resolution (Right to Enter) that I co-sponsored with Dick Ohmann is now being voted on. I think it’s a moderate and necessary gesture of support for our Palestinian and Arab colleagues who, though US citizens, have been denied entry to the West Bank to teach, do research, lecture, or attend…[Read more]
