Phillip Lundberg deposited Uncovering the Platonic in Kafka in the group
TM Literary Criticism on MLA Commons 10 years, 3 months agoKafka’s Romanticism/Platonism is hidden underneath the covers. In this article I show how better translations can help the reader take the covers off the bed. Whether it be K.’s meeting with Buergel in the Castle or with the Josef K.’s meeting with the Priest in The Trial,
essentially the message resonates. A preview of ESSENTIAL KAFKA. -

Readings included work by Rita…[Read more]

Literary Criticism on MLA Commons 10 years, 8 months agoIn his seminar, Specters of Marx, Jacques Derrida discusses how one of the essential qualities of the specter is his ability to appear incessantly. The inability to know when the specter may appear, however, not only enforces its haunting quality but also conveys a despairing sense of what Derrida refers to as empty Messianism from which emits…[Read more]

Monika Dix replied to the topic MLA 2016 Austin: Panel Ideas? in the forum
East Asian Languages and Literatures to 1900 on MLA Commons 11 years, 1 month agoI also support the idea of women’s presence and writing in the premodern canon. How about something like “women, agency, and literary production (“literary arts” if you think about music, drama, etc.) in premodern East Asia”???
Just a thought that we can discuss more in Vancouver.

East Asian Languages and Literatures to 1900 on MLA Commons 11 years, 1 month agoThe above discussion about women’s presence and the premodern canon is very interesting to me as well. This will be a wonderful topic to draw scholars who specialize in women represented in poetry, fiction and drama in late imperial period as well as historical context for such representations.

East Asian Languages and Literatures to 1900 on MLA Commons 11 years, 1 month agoAll these are wonderful ideas! With regard to “women and the premodern canon” — why not “nimen” or “tamen” and the premodern canon? East Asian Languages and Literatures to 1900 on MLA Commons 11 years, 1 month agoHi — sorry not to respond to this earlier — was out at a conference.
The “reading Asian religious texts as literature” is particularly attractive to me — I would have suggested that even if you didn’t bring it up! And I think it’s something we need to encourage more in the field.
“Women and the premodern canon” would be nice as well — I…[Read more]
