@mollief I write about Sherlock Holmes whenever possible — but the paper I am preparing to upload is about a Holmesian video game. I haven’t delivered a paper on the Doyle stories yet, but as soon as I do, I hope to help populate the field.

I look forward to reading your Dracula article! Right up my alley.

I’ve uploaded my vis rhet paper that I presented at NeMLA; I hope to put up my Holmes paper shortly. I feel extra pressure to review to typos and other gems lurking about…

This is the challenge I have been waiting for, because I have felt utterly unsure what work I could/should share. This is fantastic.

I think today I am going to clean up and upload two papers I presented at two conferences. I have only presented them, not even tried to publish them, which made me leery for some reason about putting them on CORE. After reading the blog post, though, I feel far more confident about doing this. I have seen and appreciated how scholars at conferences I couldn’t attend made their work available, and I found it incredibly helpful and generous given how difficult and expensive it is to travel. I want to be part of the community that shares, so that while it’s great to be there in person and all, it’s not a complete barrier to academic entry if you cannot sit face-to-face with me while I present. I’ll benefit from more exposure and hopefully conversation, and hopefully I’ll be helping to nurture the culture of generosity I have appreciated.

One of the notes I made as I was thinking about your original query is the ethics of map-making (of imaginary worlds as well as “real” ones). It sounds like both Tally and Harvey might be helpful with that? I’m thinking about my own biases as I try to make up my own maps, assumptions, that sort of thing. Have you run into any of those issues in your readings?

This challenge was difficult for me at first — until @kirstenbussiere posted about completing the challenge on Twitter, was retweeted by HC, and I found out how networking can manifest!

Like everyone (I imagine), I felt awkward starting a new conversation in groups that seemed inert, but I understand that if no one overcomes the awkwardness, communities die off. Which is depressing, because I have had great success networking on Twitter, and I would like to have another complementary platform to use for longer discussions, document sharing, etc.

In order to complete this challenge, I got off Twitter for five seconds and posted a longer response to Kirsten’s inquiry — the sort of response Twitter really can’t handle. I really appreciate events like this Summer Camp, and folks like @caitlinduffy49, for inspiring the kind of action that can keep this place thriving.

I am so interested in this topic — thank you for introducing it!

You are probably well familiar with this online article, but I found it really helpful to get myself situated: https://bookriot.com/2015/09/02/making-maps-books-two-cartographers-tell-us-done/

I find the idea of the back-and-forth between the map-makers and the authors really interesting.

Have you already read Here Be Dragons: Exploring Fantasy Maps and Settings by Stefan Ekman? I’ve only skimmed but I hope to do a deeper dive, especially if you recommend it.

Hi there! I’m Dana Gavin, wrapping up coursework in my PhD studies at Old Dominion University while I teach at Marist College. I am excited to learn more about being a very deliberate and thoughtful online communicator. For example, academic Twitter has been a joy for me, but I want to make sure I am proceeding forward with best practices in mind. Cheers and I look forward to learning from everyone!

      Caitlin,

My profile picture was the clearest photo I could find that had been taken in the last 10 years. 😀

My cover photo is a picture I took in the British Museum several years ago, and it’s relevant to my Victorian/British studies research. I use these two pictures across all of my social media platforms as well as my website.

I’d like to get another head shot, but right now, I’m just aiming for consistency.
