ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 4 months agoEBSCO was having trouble getting them from their Excel sheets (they do both Excel and ONIX), so we added them to our ONIX 2.1 and ONIX 3 output. It seems to have helped the EBSCO situation. No idea if any other vendors are using the data, but we send it. SubjectSchemeIdentifier “04”

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 4 months agoHi everyone,
Does anyone currently include Library of Congress Subject Headings in outgoing metadata? It’s been suggested that we include it but we’re not sure if it is worth implementing at this time or how common it is to include. Any thoughts would be helpful.
Thanks,

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 5 months agoHi Chris,
Not really. Sales reps are still asking me only to list hardcovers as related products, and Dave at Yankee Book Peddler is still asking me to list them separately. This time around I just created a second catalog that listed them all separately, and left them as related products in the regular seasonal catalog.

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 7 months agoA librarian at Duke, which subscribes to some of our digital publications, is recommending that we submit our metadata for discoverability to Ex Libris, which I gather is a major player in databases for discoverability. A quick perusal of their website and documentation is fairly daunting, so I was wondering if other presses are submitting…[Read more]

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 11 months agoHi, all,
Curious if anyone is using LoC’s ONIX feed feature to apply for CIP data. We at SUNY are attempting to prep ONIX feeds for this but we can’t get the LoC to respond to our requests. If anyone has feeds they could share as an example, that would be really helpful!

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 11 months agoB&N display’s TOCs and I believe Amazon UK as well. I was told (by someone at BISG I think that they believe Amazon US uses the TOC internally for Keywords, etc…but hard to say what Amazon truely does and doesn’t do).

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 12 months agoIf your press publishes split binds for scholarly books, how do you handle both editions in Edelweiss? (Maybe this is more of a general marketing question.) Our sales reps have pretty adamantly told me not to list them individually, but only display them as related products. But Yankee Book Peddler has specifically requested that I do list them separately.

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 12 months agoThanks, Katie. We’ve also just modified our website feed to be able to display TOCs.
Problem is, when our title mgmt system was modified to enable <contentdetail> TOCs, the implementer didn’t grasp that the content item sequence number (LevelSequenceNumber = b284) is not the same thing as Component Number (ComponentNumber = b289). The former…[Read more]

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 12 months agoHi @davidrsewell,
We have TOC data in our ONIX feeds and it displays on the book pages on our website and Edelweiss.
It also feeds to CoreSource, so it is available for any partners that will take it, but that is a moving target. Similar to your experience, we have not seen Amazon display the TOC data on book pages.

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 3 years, 12 months agoWe have fairly recently started adding TOC information to our book records in our title management system. That is being exported using the ONIX 3 <contentdetail> protocol. I don’t see that Amazon (for example) is making any use of that information. If you have TOC data in the ONIX you distribute, is anyone using it? and how?

Robert Desmond replied to the topic Metadata: Best practice for Edition info in ONIX? in the discussion
ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 4 years, 2 months agoAs an aside, the English teacher in me wants to say that the “abridged” adjective is in the wrong place. This is the second iteration of the abridged edition, so my instinct is that you to call it the “2nd abridged edition” because it comes after the “(implied: 1st) abridged edition”.
This has nothing to do, of course, with traditional naming…[Read more]

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 4 years, 2 months agoThanks, Jana!
For future reference–we ended up using “2nd Edition” and using the supply chain metadata to connect the new edition ISBNs to the previous, abridged edition ISBNs, and will also be referencing the previous edition in our marketing copy, keywords, etc.

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 4 years, 4 months agoMy inclination would be to make it 2nd edition, abridged just to be perfectly clear and to not have to worry about any misunderstandings. But you may be right about the description and supply chain data making the relationship clear.

ONIX and Metadata Issues on UP Commons 4 years, 4 months agoThe presence of the <AlternativeName> block within <Contributor> blocks in ONIX 3 and the use of ORCIDs or ISNIs are meant to deal with the situation, but the question exists of whether they are used/accepted by the database you’re using or the vendors you’re sending to. Apologies for the cross-post.
We have an author who has been ordained a deacon in the Coptic Church. With that comes a name change.
