Digital Humanities on MLA Commons 12 years, 12 months agoHi all,
I’m excited to be participating in DH2013, my first-ever DH conference. I’m sure many others are attending as well. I wonder if there are ways to create some useful crossover here with the conversations […]

Alt-Academics on MLA Commons 13 years agoWhile at work I am thinking about academics making time to write, esp. #altac folks. It’s especially hard for those of us who enjoy writing. I’m wondering about the research/writing routine of others who are #altac.
-
I’d love to hear from others about this, too. In my current position, I have 20% research time, as do my colleagues; this means that Fridays are meeting-free with the intent of allowing everyone a day of focused research, writing, coding, etc. (depending on the project). It’s unlikely I’ll have this structure forever, though, so I’m curious to…[Read more]

I have to do my purportedly “non-job” related research and writing outside of standard working hours in this job.
-
Yes, that’s my case too. My boss allows me to make time for research related to my job, but any projects not directly related have to be done outside of work.
-
For now, I’m trying to do a little every day early in the morning, but I find the super slow pace frustrating. This month I’m going to try something different and give myself a little extra time on weekends to work on my projects. I wonder how others negotiate writing/research time into their contracts.

Alt-Academics on MLA Commons 13 years agoGood idea, Brian; thanks for starting this.
Here are a couple of articles that are less squarely focused on the panels about alt-ac careers, but still relevant to this group:

Well, I just got back from MLA 2013 and I’m already thinking about MLA 2014! I have in mind a panel for MLA14 on writing support for doctoral students. If you or someone you know would be interested, drop me a line! Also feel free to pass the message along.
