I teach Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at Virginia State University, in the capacity of an adjunct Instructor. I have participated in several workshops at VSU as an Instructor, hosted by the Department of Agriculture and Human Ecology. My most recent workshop was a Global Learning and Observations to benefit the Environment (GLOBE) partnership with other Universities throughout the country. During the summers of 2009, 2010 and 2011, I assisted in teaching several topics in a 5-day workshop with hands-on experience in the use of ArcGIS software, Global Positioning System (GPS), Google Earth, focusing on issues in Food Biosecurity and Solutions for Environmental Living was offered by Virginia State University’s (VSU) Department of Agriculture and Human Ecology to a group of High School Teachers, Community College Instructors, and Undergraduate Faculty from Partner USDA Institutions (Delaware State University, Elizabeth City State University). The goals of the workshop were as follows:
• (1) To improve the instruction of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Biology for grades 9-12 through teacher training in the high schools in target area;
• (2) To build a cadre of trainers at VSU and neighboring GLOBE partner HBCUs in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and North Carolina, who in turn, will conduct teacher training programs in Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Use of Geospatial Technologies (GIS and GIS);
• (3) To host teacher training programs (workshops and summer courses) at VSU so that participating teachers implement GLOBE Protocols on Soils, Land Cover, Hydrology, Climate Change, and Applications of Geospatial Technologies (GIS and GPS) in classroom pedagogy; and
• (4) To assist the target high schools in acquiring resources and supplies/software for teaching the GLOBE Protocols for enhancing earth and environmental sciences curriculum and instruction.
