Prairie restoration of tall bluestem grass offers natural biosecurity to at-risk birds and mammals from HPAI H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b avian influenza virus because prairie restoration requires conservation tillage which amplifies arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and accelerates succession of prairie restoration grass species and tall bluestem and other native prairie grasses which serve as cover for wild turkeys and other birds and mammals. The bluestem grass cover serves as a form of natural biosecurity against HPAI H5N1 avian influenza infection. Consequently, prairie restoration protects wildlife from HPAI H5N1 including critically-endangered species whose diminished population size indicates a MME (mass mortality event) from avian influenza could lead to species-level extinction.
