Teaching SIG on ARLISNA Commons 2 years, 11 months agoHey Christine! I would second what Carla-Mae and Lora have said. I would also add that these types of workshops are relevant to the business of libraries in a variety of ways. Engaged or active learning experiences (like the ones you’ve described) are a fundamentally important pathway for learning. They are also important manifestations of…[Read more]

Lora Farrell replied to the topic Teaching workshops or sessions that are not specifically research related. in the discussion
Teaching SIG on ARLISNA Commons 2 years, 11 months agoI think these kinds of workshops are a great idea for the library. They draw students in and help them feel less intimidated by the library. “The library of the future” is innovative, and that includes unconventional activities. Some students feel uncomfortable coming to the staff and asking questions. Having informal workshops, or mind…[Read more]

Teaching SIG on ARLISNA Commons 2 years, 11 months agoHi Christine,
My library does a lot of these kinds of events. We’ve had puzzle, coloring and lego tables, whiteboard prompts on random topics for the students to write/draw their responses, therapy dogs, zine making etc. As you suggested, we view these as a way to make the library a welcoming community hub – not unlike the public library. It’s…[Read more]

Teaching SIG on ARLISNA Commons 2 years, 11 months agoHi librarian hive mind. I was wondering how many other librarians, esp. in art & design schools and universities, put on “fun” workshops for their students and/or faculty. If so, do you get any pushback from administration because it’s not specifically research-related? How do you justify it to those who object? At Columbus College of Art & Design…[Read more]

History of Art on Humanities Commons 2 years, 11 months agoIn the Madrid photographic panorama between 1857 and 1868, the presence of Ángel Alonso Martínez is a permanent note, which does not correspond to the scant knowledge we have of his professional career. We intend to shed some more light on this signature: «A. Alonso Martínez and Brother». / En el panorama fotográfico madrileño entre 1857 y 1868,…[Read more]

Open Access Books Network on Humanities Commons 2 years, 12 months agoHi David, that’s indeed an excellent question, and just to add to John’s mention of the OATP, there’s also an option to narrow one’s search down via boolean operators, so searching for oa.business_models AND oa.books will provide you with a more specific version of the list that John mentioned…[Read more]

Open Access Books Network on Humanities Commons 3 years agoHi David, excellent question! John makes a great suggestion with OATP, which is really useful in keeping up with new announcements and current developments. The difficulty with any online list is keeping it up to date — as you note, there are a lot of new initiatives like Path To Open launching at the moment. My colleague Tom Grady and I recently…[Read more]

David Watson started the topic Is there a list of Open Monograph schemes? in the discussion
Open Access Books Network on Humanities Commons 3 years agoThere’s now a fair number of different Open Monograph schemes, running different models or variations of models – and new schemes keep launching, ie ‘Path to Open‘ that just launched. This is great, but does mean it’s difficult to keep track of what the current OA monograph landscape looks like.
Is there anywhere a list of these different schemes?
