Ben Carver deposited Alternate Histories and Nineteenth-Century Literature on Humanities Commons 6 years, 3 months ago
This book provides the first thematic survey and analysis of nineteenth-century writing that imagined outcomes that history might have produced. Narratives of possible worlds and scenarios—referred to here as “alternate histories”—proliferated during the nineteenth century and clustered around pressing themes and emergent disciplines of knowled…[Read more]

Ben Carver deposited “The Cash Nexus”: Realism and Conspiracy in Balzac and Dickens on Humanities Commons 6 years, 3 months ago
This chapter argues that the basis for Honoré de Balzac’s early stories and Charles Dickens’s last completed novel, Our Mutual Friend is the circulation of money, which allows narrative point of view into every living room and place of work where money can be borrowed or owed. Not only does this means of representing the life of a city requ…[Read more]

Ben Carver deposited Genres of conspiracy in nineteenth-century British writing on Humanities Commons 6 years, 3 months ago
This chapter provides an overview of the figures and conventions in nineteenth-century literature
that gave rise to what can be glossed as ‘conspiracy fiction’. Networks, invasion and detection
are the tropes to which conspiracy narratives attached themselves, and from which conspiracy
fiction developed into genres that are recognisable tod…[Read more] -
Ben Carver deposited “Strangely Inorganic Patriotism”: Serializing Invasion Fiction at the Turn of the Century on Humanities Commons 6 years, 3 months ago
William Le Queux’s and George Griffith’s future war narratives, published in Alfred Harmsworth’s and Cyril Arthur Pearson’s magazines and newspapers in the 1890s and 1900s, imagined a war to come that with hindsight they seemed to hasten or provoke. This article reassesses the genre’s literary history by attending to its proliferation at the turn…[Read more]

Ben Carver replied to the topic Maps and Speculative Fiction – Research Recommendations in the discussion
Speculative and Science Fiction on Humanities Commons 7 years, 6 months agoI’ve just attended a conference in Aarhus, where Elly McCausland presented on unreliable maps in Children’s adventure fiction, from her current monograph project. Another genre where maps proliferate is invasion fiction. Childers’ Riddle of the Sands is impossible to read without referring to the 2 (3?) accompanying maps.

Ben Carver started the topic Proposed S/Z Reading Group (May-June 2018) in the discussion
Narrative theory and Narratology on Humanities Commons 7 years, 9 months agoI propose a reading group whose only text will be S/Z, by Roland Barthes. I’m looking at this as part of a project on the relation between conspiracy and literary criticism, but would hope that fellow readers would bring other enthusiasms to the group.
My suggested method is a fortnightly online meeting, here, on Thursday evenings in May and June…[Read more]

Ben Carver deposited ‘A Gleaming and Glorious Star’: Rethinking History in the Plurality-of-Worlds Debate on Humanities Commons 8 years, 1 month ago
This article examines how the application of optical technologies to the plurality-of-worlds debate in the nineteenth century brought historical questions of determinism, providence and progress into the field of astronomical science. The development of the telescope and spectroscope, described by Richard A. Proctor in 1870 as ‘light-gatherer’ and…[Read more]
