The Mendelssohn Network will meet for a fringe conference at the University of Denver on November 8 (afternoon/early evening) and 9 (morning) 2023, in advance of the annual meeting of the American Musicological Society.

We welcome proposals for presentations on the Mendelssohns (Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Fanny Hensel née Mendelssohn); their music; their social, cultural, political, religious, and other contexts; their collaborators and colleagues; and any other related topics. Proposals may be for performances, lightning talks, lecture-recitals, panels, standard papers (10–20 mins.), works-in-progress, and alternative format presentations.  We will have access to a piano throughout the pre-conference and would be delighted to see proposals that could make use of it.

We particularly welcome proposals on the following themes:

      1. Fanny Hensel and Felix Mendelssohn: Context

What role can “context” (broadly defined) play in illuminating the creative work of Fanny Hensel, née Mendelssohn, and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy? Topics may include educational and cultural influences, family and friends, networks, geographies, politics, legacies and critical reception; or approaches that situate the Mendelssohns vis-à-vis developments in women’s studies, cultural studies, and performance studies.

      2. Female Musicians in the Mendelssohns’ Circle

Topics may include gender, agency, and authorship in the Mendelssohns’ circle, as well as reflections on how approaches to Fanny Hensel might spur further exploration of women’s creativity in the nineteenth century.

The language of the presentations will be English.  Abstracts of no more than 300 words may be sent to mendelssohnnetwork -at- gmail.com by June 15, 2023.  Presenters will be informed of the decision by July 15, 2023.

Please address any logistical questions to Laura Stokes, laura_stokes -at- brown.edu.
