New descriptions of STAC 8 for cases brought by plaintiffs I-Z  will be going online later this week – at first without dates (my uploading error) but very soon all dated.

The new descriptions are an amalgamation (by some very hard-working students) of the typescript catalogues providing parties, places  and subjects, with Tom Barnes’s printed computer analysis giving first date, category of offence and clues to other court cases. We have added a couple of new subject categories too – theatre, and religious differences.

Many thanks to Megan Johnston of Durham University for getting the draft descriptions ready for upload, identifying cross-references and rectifying errors, as part of her doctoral internship at TNA.

Yes, there it is – all searchable within STAC 8. Of course,  you can search across this and across other courts as well. Worth restricting searches in Discovery by National Archives and by date, and then selecting the lettercodes you want in the filter bar. You can pick up a lot of related cases in Chancery (C2 for James I) which are only dated by 1603-1625, so a mutual benefit there as well.

STAC 8 also has the gender coding SFP (sole female plaintiff) and JFP (joint female plaintiff, which you can add as search terms in conjunction with any other search terms – including Tom Barnes’ categories of offence. These are given in brief in the series level description of STAC 8.

We have not  yet done the creation of modernised short titles and a unique identifier, or a real description of what document to expect.
