      Hi peeps!

Thanks again for an inspiring gettogether in Denver!

The question of whether the interest group should give out an award came up again, and I have thought of something of a counter-suggestion.

We’ve been discussing the problems of canonisation, both in regards of music and scholarship, and the idea of awarding “outstanding contributions” is sort of feeding into that kind of vibe – while on the other hand, celebrating and giving attention to new scholarship in our field is both important and cool.

What if we instead of giving out an award did some sort of a more collective celebration of publications? We could do a “hip-hop music theory mixtape” of sorts, with short(!) reviews and musings on a collection of the last year’s hip-hop music theory publications to celebrate the breadth and growth of the sub-field and make sure more people are made aware of everything that’s published instead of pitting the various publications against one another.

      Wouldn’t that be cool?
