The Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group is a discursive space for scholars of music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and avant-garde. Through its annual meetings and online communications, the group aims to strengthen, support, and develop its members’ ideas and sense of community. It also seeks to bring attention to and foster scholarship on post-1945 music both within the Society for Music Theory and in music scholarship at large.

The Society for Music Theory’s Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group and Mathematics of Music Interest Group will hold a joint virtual meetup on Tuesday, August 1st at 2:00 pm EDT. The program will consist of the following three presentations:

      • “Combination Tones and Ring Models of Frequency” Noah Kahrs (Eastman School of Music)
      • “A Monophonic Canon Generator for Composers” Jeremy Kastine (Life University)
      • “Families of Sets Arising from a Cellular Automaton in Mod-12 and Other Modular Spaces” Evan Jones (Florida State University)

Brief abstracts of these presentations can be found in the attached program; in addition, each presenter has recommended a reading related to their presentation topic. As a way to facilitate deeper discussion, attendees are invited to prepare by reading any/all of the suggested readings that they are able to access. (Note: This preparation is optional; all are invited and encouraged to attend, regardless of whether or not they have completed these readings.)

If you plan to attend the session, please submit your name and email through this Google Form: https://forms.gle/XKhSnr2K9gXyNJcg6We will distribute the Zoom link to the emails collected through the form. You can expect to receive the link the day before the meeting.
