The Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group is a discursive space for scholars of music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and avant-garde. Through its annual meetings and online communications, the group aims to strengthen, support, and develop its members’ ideas and sense of community. It also seeks to bring attention to and foster scholarship on post-1945 music both within the Society for Music Theory and in music scholarship at large.

      Dear IG members:

      Our post-meeting survey showed significant interest in setting up an award for scholarship in our area. Several members have offered to serve on the committee for the first award, which we hope to be able to offer this year. We’d like to solicit feedback from the group on the details of the award parameters for this first year. (Based on the number of submissions and the award committee’s experience, we could discuss changes for future years at our meeting in Minneapolis.)

      If you have thoughts/suggestions on the questions below (or anything else pertaining to the award), please comment on this thread.

      Thanks!

      Tara and Laura

      1. What date range should the award cover? We were thinking January 2018– December 2019, with Jan 2020 forward being covered in the next award, but we could potentially extend the date range further back.

      2. What types of publications should be included? To keep this job manageable for the committee, we were thinking only peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.

      3. What should the award be called?

      4. Is a three-person award committee a sufficient size?

      This sounds like a great idea!  Here are my thoughts:

      1. Jan. 2018-Dec. 2019 sounds great for the first date range
      2. Agreed–articles and book chapters only.
      3. Not sure.  Maybe something with “20th and 21st repertoire”?
      4. Yes.

        hi. very interesting all the ideas. I have two ideas for the name of the award:

        * exploring post 1945
        * in search of post 1945

        they are generic names. however, they can open up ideas for other names. More elaborate.
        hugs.
