The Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group is a discursive space for scholars of music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and avant-garde. Through its annual meetings and online communications, the group aims to strengthen, support, and develop its members’ ideas and sense of community. It also seeks to bring attention to and foster scholarship on post-1945 music both within the Society for Music Theory and in music scholarship at large.

      Hi everyone,

Thanks for your input on the bylaws. Here is a link to the final draft. The only non-cosmetic change made since the third draft is that “20th and 21st music” has been replaced with “music after 1945,” as Timothy Johnson suggested.

Please follow this link to vote on the bylaws and take the post-meeting survey. The deadline to complete the vote/survey is next Monday, Dec. 12.

      Best,

      Tara and Laura

The bylaws look got to me, and thanks for all the work on them.  The only question I have is what happened to saying “for scholars of art music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and avant-garde.”

      or

“for scholars of non-commercial music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and avant-garde.”

Otherwise will it be obvious enough that minimalist music is included under the umbrella of ‘experimental’?  The reason I bring up these two issues is that (1) We don’t want this group to become the prog-rock (Genesis, Yes, Rush, ELP, King Crimson) offshoot or spillover from the Popular Music IG (‘non-commercial’ would deter this); and (2) We don’t want that further balkanization to take place where SMT members feel the need to start up another IG for minimalist, post-minimalist, and experimental music; those topics ought to be included in our IG, IMO.

      Hi Josh,

There was some discussion of this section on draft 2, and the consensus seemed to be that the language was adequate as it is now, which is why we left it that way in the next two drafts. Since we’re already voting, let’s see how the vote turns out, and if it becomes a problem, we can always revise it in the future.

      Thanks!

      Tara

        Hi Tara,

I remember the discussion, and I thought the consensus was that the language needed to be tweaked. I don’t think it’s far off and I voted to ratify it as is.  But I do think the question of tweaking should be considered in a future update to the bylaws.

        Josh
