The Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group is a discursive space for scholars of music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and avant-garde. Through its annual meetings and online communications, the group aims to strengthen, support, and develop its members’ ideas and sense of community. It also seeks to bring attention to and foster scholarship on post-1945 music both within the Society for Music Theory and in music scholarship at large.

The SMT Post-1945 Music Interest Group will celebrate the centenary of Iannis Xenakis at SMT New Orleans (November 10-13, 2022). We invite 250-word abstracts for lightning talks that explore topics related to all things by or about Xenakis, including his compositions, designs, notation, computer technology, and his life and legacy. Some broad suggested topics include (but are certainly not limited to):

      • Aesthetics, philosophy, and politics
      • Computational music models
      • Architecture, space, and parametric design
      • Technology interaction and new media
      • Theatrical works and performances
      • Archival research and criticism
      • Xenakis’ direct influence on present-day music and artistic practice

Presentations on composers or music theory concepts indirectly related to Xenakis may be considered as well. Supplemental materials are welcome but not required. If included with the abstract, please send as one document.
