The Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group is a discursive space for scholars of music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and avant-garde. Through its annual meetings and online communications, the group aims to strengthen, support, and develop its members’ ideas and sense of community. It also seeks to bring attention to and foster scholarship on post-1945 music both within the Society for Music Theory and in music scholarship at large.

The Society for Music Theory’s Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group and Mathematics of Music Interest Group will hold a joint virtual meetup on Tuesday, August 1st at 2:00 pm EDT.

We invite volunteers to present both informal “research updates” (5–10 minutes) and more formal “lightning talks” (10–15 minutes) that engage with the topic “Mathematics and Experimental Music.” We encourage presenters to interpret this theme broadly; potential topics might concern (though are not limited to):

      • the mathematical structure of pre-compositional materials and/or generalizations of such materials
      • the analysis of works that involve mathematics-inspired processes in their construction
      • mathematical analytical methods (e.g., transformational theory, DFT analysis, geometric music theory) applied to experimental music
      • mathematical ways of describing relationships underlying experimental instruments or interfaces

We also ask presenters to suggest one piece of scholarly work (an article, book chapter, etc.) that they find formative to their project. A list of recommended readings will be distributed to attendees beforehand so that all participants have the opportunity to discuss these readings during the event.

If you would like to share your work at this event, please contact William Ayers (william.ayers@ucf.edu; co-chair, SMT Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group) and Leah Frederick (lnfreder@umich.edu; co-chair, SMT Mathematics of Music Interest Group). Presenters should send the following no later than Friday, June 30th: (1) a title and brief 1–3 sentence summary of your topic and (2) a suggested scholarly work related to your project for attendees to read (see description above).

Presentations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are especially encouraged to participate in this event as both presenters and attendees.
